Telescope James Webb recorded a detailed image of the NGC 2283 Spiral Galaxy, located in the constellation of a large dog at 45 million light years from the ground, reports Space.com.
A study published by the European Space Agency (ESA) shows the active formation of stars in this space. In the picture you can see the middle jumper, surrounded by bright spiral sleeves, literally “burning” young stars and intersellar fuel. It is hydrogen which is a major element for the birth of new luminaries.
An important role in this process is played by supernovae – explosion of massive stars, enriching the interstellar space with heavy elements, such as oxygen and sodium. One of the recent examples is the supernova SN 2023AXU, recorded at the NGC 2283 in January 2023.
The image was created based on the six shots taken by telescopes for 17 minutes. To obtain a detailed panorama, astronomers use infrared filters to consider gas radiation, dust and stars in different spectral ranges.
The NGC 2283 is part of an extensive research program that covers 55 galaxies of the local universe. ESA scientists have noted that observing these star systems helps to better understand the processes of star development, as well as the chemical and physical conditions of the “stellar nursery” in space.
