During construction in Alkmaar, workers stumble upon a medieval cesspool, where they discover a unique boot from the 15th century.

In the municipality of Alkmaar in the Netherlands, during the construction of an underground landfill, workers found a medieval cesspool with a peculiar shoe from the late 15th to early 16th century. It was reported by Reuters.

The archaeologist studying the find, Silke Lange, said the boot, made of birch, was a size 36 and was well preserved due to storage conditions in a cesspool.

“This is a very special artifact because wooden shoes are usually associated with farmers. However, in reality these shoes were worn every day,” Lange explained.

Scientists estimate that the cesspool was in use from 1450 to 1558. This is the first time wooden shoes have been found during archaeological excavations in the Netherlands.

Klomps are traditional shoes in the Netherlands that symbolize not only the daily life of farmers, but also the city dwellers of medieval Europe. This unique search will help to better understand the lives of people and the peculiarities of their creations.

It was previously reported that in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico, during the construction of a highway, workers accidentally discovered a pyramid older than 1375 years.
