Doctors from Kyiv Okhmatdyt transplanted part of the liver from his mother to a five-month-old baby.
Kyiv doctors successfully performed a unique operation: a part of the liver from his mother was transplanted into a five-month-old baby. The National Children’s Specialized Hospital of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine Okhmatdyt reported this on its Facebook page.
The hospital said this is the first monosegmental liver transplant in Ukraine from an adult for a patient of this age.
The boy was born early, at 36 weeks of pregnancy. The child was diagnosed with a rare developmental defect – biliary atresia, in which the gallbladder and bile ducts in the liver are absent. Therefore, toxins begin to accumulate in the liver, which quickly leads to cirrhosis. The diagnosis was made late, so it was impossible to avoid a transplant. A boy named Matvey came to Okhmatdyt at the age of four months.
The child arrived at the hospital in critical condition. Due to liver failure, his kidney has also started to fail. A team of intensive care doctors, resuscitators, and nephrologists fought for the boy’s life for more than a week, using special equipment that temporarily performs the functions of the kidneys and liver. When the condition stabilized, the doctors decided to perform a transplant.
Okhmatdyt doctors consulted with colleagues from Japan and Korea to choose the best strategy for Matvey.
“Transplantation of a monosegmental liver from an adult donor requires very precise calculations, because the organ must correspond to the weight and physiological characteristics of the child that Matvey is his mother, that the liver is perfect for this extremely complicated operation 118 grams,” explained Okhmatdyt transplant surgeon Oleg Godik.
The transplant took about a day: first they took the organ from the mother, and then transferred it to the boy.
After the transplant, Matvey went through a difficult period of rehabilitation. Only on the third day did the mother see her son.
The child has been discharged from the house. In the next six months, he will undergo regular examinations under the supervision of Okhmatdyt specialists. Doctors will monitor all the necessary indicators and arrange tests.
As we have already written, a team of Kyiv and Lviv doctors performed a heart-lung complex transplantation operation for the first time in Ukraine.
