Year of the Hydra of Hearthsone brings updates to the Starter Set and Set Rotation on April 12

New content and updates for established modes arrive with Year of the Hydra and the Journey to the Sunken City expansion

the big clock hearthstone one more chime in the sky! That’s right: it’s almost time to say goodbye to the Year of the Griffin as we prepare for what’s to come at the Tavern. The Year of the Hydra begins with the release of ‘Journey to the Sunken City’ on April 12. The Essential Set will now have 250 cards, including 72 returning cards with new tweaks, including classics like Reno Jackson and Wild Pyromancer.

Many heads are better than one

The new year of Hearthstone, the Year of the Hydra, will bring a lot of content and updates to established modes, with a renewed focus on support and optimization. You’ll see more quality of life and other improvements like being able to equip a random hero skin, in-game reporting, and an overall emphasis on client refinement. This is all in addition, of course, to our usual three card sets and tons of new content for Battlegrounds, Mercenaries, and more.

Renewing the foundations

The Year of the Hydra will kick off with the release of ‘Journey to the Sunken City’ on April 12, continuing the rotation of sets – so Ashes of Outland, Scholomance University, and Darkmoon Deliriums will go into the Free.

After rotation, the Standard card pool will include Forged in the Wilderness, Together in Stormwind City, Divided in Alterac Valley, Voyage to the Sunken City, and the Essential Set.

Core Set updates will roll out as the sets rotate, exchanging 57 cards for another 72, for a total of 250 cards — 15 more than last year. These new boosts are old cards, but some of them have been adapted for the current game.

Of the cards that are back in the Essential Set, it’s worth noting the original League of Explorers: Reno Jackson, Brann Bronzebeard, Elise Mirestela and Dom Finlei Mrrggltone. Other veteran favorites include Emissary of Chaos, Untamed Pyromancer, Acolyte of Pain, Mossy Horror, Huntress Stealth, and Fandral Guenelmo.
