The photo of Mercury was taken on June 23, 2022, when the spacecraft flew beyond the planet for a gravitational maneuver.

A European Space Agency (ESA) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) joint robotic space mission probe called BepiColomb has captured a new image of Mercury. This is stated in a press release from ESA.

The ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission captured an impressive view of Mercury’s geological landscape on June 23, 2022, as the spacecraft flew over the planet for gravity assist.

The photo was taken at 12:49:22 Kyiv time by Mercury Transfer Module’s Monitoring Camera 2. At that time, the space probe was approximately 920 km from Mercury’s surface. And a few minutes before that, the probe was as close as possible to Mercury at a distance of 200 km.

Recall that the BepiColombo spacecraft sent the first images of Mercury on October 2, 2021.
