In Lvov, a girl with cerebral palsy was operated on, whose spine was curved 90 degrees due to scoliosis. This was reported by the First Medical Association of Lvov.
According to doctors, a severe form of the disease left the boy side-by-side and caused constant excruciating pain.
15-year-old Mikhailina from the Lviv region was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP) when she was 8 months old. It is a disease of the central nervous system that affects coordination, motor and muscle activity.
The girl has been using a wheelchair since childhood because her brain sends negative impulses to her muscles, so her legs do not follow.
Since the age of eight, Mikhailinka has been visiting orthopedists and traumatologists. They saved the child from contractures – movement restrictions in the joints of the lower extremities. Because of this, the girl was able to move her legs and stand on top of it.
However, at the age of 12, Mikhailina began to develop scoliosis, a curvature of the spine. The disease progressed rapidly, so the doctors decided to undergo surgery. At the time of the intervention, the ridge of Mikhailinka was already bent by 90 degrees.
Lviv surgeons performed the operation together with their American colleague Mark Dyrzhka from New York Presbyterian Hospital. It lasted six hours.
“First, we separate the spine from the soft tissues. Then we separate each vertebra and insert into them two special screws, which are connected to each other with titanium rods,” said the doctor about the course of operation.
The girl managed to straighten her spine by 80%. Now the girl is recovering quickly after the operation.
It was previously reported that a nine-year-old boy who lost a leg due to cancer was given prosthetics in Lvov.
