Researchers studied samples of Beethoven’s hair and obtained important new information about the health and life of the great composer.
Scientists have discovered large amounts of lead and other toxic substances in the hair of German composer Ludwig van Beethoven, which appears to be the cause of his deafness. The New York Times writes about it.
A potential source of Beethoven’s high lead levels is cheap wine. A form of lead known as lead acetate or “lead sugar” has a sweet taste and is often added to low-quality wine to improve the taste.
Beethoven drank copious amounts of alcohol, almost a bottle a day and more, considering it healthy and also an addiction.
In the last days before his death at the age of 56 in 1827, his friends spooned him wine while he was seriously ill.
Let us remember that the cause of Beethoven’s deafness has already been named.
