In English it is called a breaching whale – that is, a whale that comes out of the water. It can jump completely (when more than half of the animal’s body appears on the surface) or partially.
Whales often come out of the water, but people don’t seem to see this action very often;
As the scientists explained, in the video a young representative of the humpback came out of the water – he is considered one of the most jumping representatives of the baleen whale series.
According to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States), whale jumping on the surface of the water is one of the twenty actions characteristic of these animals.
“In English it is called a breaching whale – that is, a whale breaking out of the water. It can jump completely (when more than half of the animal’s body appears on the surface) or partially. Also during the jump there are other’ t different types of rotations – clockwise, counterclockwise or no rotation at all when the whale falls on its back or side,” explained scientists from the Academician Vernadsky station.
Scientists suggest that this behavior has several explanations.
First of all, whales try to get rid of parasites that live in large numbers on their skin, reduce irritation from them and “scratch” themselves in the water.
Second version: jumping is a form of communication. Since the sound of the jump can be heard from a distance, it can be used as a signal.
We remind you that early Ukrainian polar explorers showed what the sunset looks like in the Atlantic Ocean.
