254 thousand doses of omicron-specific vaccine against COVID-19 were delivered to Ukraine

The disease of the Omicron strain coronavirus mainly occurs as a common respiratory disease and does not cause severe oxygen dependence, but remains dangerous for groups at risk.

Ukraine received more than 254 thousand doses of omicron-specific vaccine against COVID-19. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on Wednesday, March 28.

“An updated version of the Comirnaty vaccine from the American company Pfizer, specifically adapted for protection against the Omicron strain of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) delivered 254 thousand doses of vaccine for children from 5 years of age and adults in Ukraine, then it will be distributed to all regions. The delivery took place with the support of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (Gavi),” said the statement.

It was noted that the batch received contained vaccines for children from 5 to 11 years of age and for adults and adolescents from 12 years of age.

According to the Ministry of Health, since the beginning of the epidemic period in October 2023, more than 3.7 million Ukrainians have fallen ill with ARVI, influenza and COVID-19. During this period, 839 deaths were recorded due to complications of COVID-19.

The ministry reports that the disease with the Omicron strain coronavirus mainly occurs as a common respiratory disease and does not cause severe oxygen dependence, but remains dangerous for risk groups: people with pathologies, chronic diseases and weakened immunity over 60 years old. Therefore, people at risk are recommended to get vaccinated, which can be done at a family doctor or at a hospital-based vaccination site.

The Ministry of Health reminded that vaccinations against COVID-19 in 2024 will remain free of charge for all Ukrainians.

Deputy Minister – Chief State Sanitary Doctor Igor Kuzin emphasized: the global trend for COVID-19 indicates that the virus is moving to the category of seasonal diseases.

It will be recalled that by the end of December 2023, the rate of incidence of COVID-19 in the world in the past four weeks has increased by 52% compared to the previous 28-day period.
