In ancient times, the sanctuary was the center of the worship of Artemis (the goddess of the hunt, wild animals and nature).
Archaeologists have completely excavated the remains of the Temple of Artemis on the island of Euboea (Greece), which was built around 700 BC. It was reported by Arkeonews.
According to scientists, this search revealed many surprises. In particular, it has the shape of an apse (an architectural element covered by a semi-dome), which is quite unusual for that time, and its dimensions are amazing – the length of the temple reaches 34 meters.
It is known that in ancient times the sanctuary was the center of the worship of Artemis (the goddess of the hunt, wild animals and nature). Archaeologists found fires or altars inside the temple, and not outside, as was often the case in Greek sanctuaries.
On these stone platforms, fire consumed the carcasses of the animals sacrificed to the goddess. This is evidenced by the thick layer of ash, rich in burnt bones. The smoke of the sacrifices probably escaped through holes in the roof of the building.
Also near the temple, archaeologists discovered many ancient artifacts, including jewelry, tools and pots. A particularly unusual find is an ivory sculpture of an Egyptian.
Excavations have also uncovered the remains of artifacts from earlier periods, including a possible building from the 9th or 8th century BC. BC, bronze figurines of animals and the bull’s head from the late Bronze Age.
The researchers are currently studying their findings in laboratories.
