A long drought in the years 1400-1450, according to researchers, led to the destruction of Mayapan, which threatened agricultural and trade routes. Due to food shortages and deteriorating conditions, people may die or become homeless. This is stated in a study published in the journal Nature Communications.
The remains of likely members of the state presidents were found in burials in Mayapan, indicating bloody conflicts. The results also confirm the collapse of the institution in 1441–1461, caused by political conflicts and social unrest.
The team used extensive historical data, including population changes, climate conditions and data on modern diets. Analysis of human remains also revealed a link between rainfall and population, and between reduced rainfall and worsening conflicts.
