The three tombs, belonging to a family of high social status, date from the Wei and Jin dynasties (220-420).
In Luoyang’s Mengjin district, archaeologists discovered three well-preserved tombs belonging to a family of high social status. Xinhua reported this.
According to Liu Bing, a junior researcher at the city’s Archaeological Research Institute in charge of the excavation project at the site, the tombs were built during the Wei and Jin dynasties (220-420).
The largest tomb consists of a long passage, paved paths, a brick and stone door and burial chambers. There are 12 pillar holes on both sides of the 40-meter main passage and seven steps inside, so the total depth of the underground tomb is 11 meters.
According to Liu, such a tomb passage and many stairs built on a long slope were a symbol of the high social status of the tomb owners, and the largest tomb found in Luoyang was second only to the then emperor’s mausoleum.
More than 200 objects made of pottery, porcelain, bronze, bone, jade, gold and coins have been found at the site, providing new materials for the study of funerary customs of the period.
The particular attention of archaeologists is attracted by a well-preserved fragment of lacquered ivory pottery, exquisitely crafted, which also indicates the unusual social status of the tomb owner.
The remains of a stela with inscriptions containing information including the names of the tomb owner’s followers were found at the excavation site. However, without the exact names and life stories of the tomb owners on the stelae, their identities remain a mystery and require further research, Liu said.
