The black hole itself is about six million times more massive than the Sun and appears to be gobbling up matter from the surrounding galaxy five times faster than current theories suggest.
It has been noted that the size of supermassive black holes, formed less than 1 billion years after the Big Bang, contradicts the modern theory of their formation, according to which the initial mass of a black hole cannot be millions or billions- billion times greater than the mass of the Sun.
Roberto Maiolino, from the Department of Physics at the University of Cambridge and head of the team of astronomers, called the discovery a “giant leap forward” in the science of black holes.
