Marsotrus with a strength of 4.7 points set a record during the observation of seismic activity on Mars by the InSight apparatus since November 2018.
A group of scientists found that the powerful Marsquake detected as part of the InSight mission on May 4, 2022, was generated by tectonic processes in the bowels of the planet. It was reported by AGU Journals.
In particular, in May 2022, a NASA mission recorded seismic waves on the Red Planet with a magnitude of 4.7. This event, designated S1222a, was the largest of the entire mission. Therefore, this forced researchers to begin a large-scale search for a possible source. It, as previously assumed by planetary scientists, must have been formed by the fall of a large asteroid in the southern hemisphere of Mars near the equator.
The scientists analyzed the seismic characteristics and determined the approximate diameter of the crater. Approximately, it should be 300 m wide and have an explosion zone measuring about 180 km wide. The researchers then tried to detect the new crater in images of the surface of Mars, but did not find any corresponding transient atmospheric phenomena or a fresh eruption zone. Thus, they concluded that the S1222a event likely had a tectonic origin, generated by as yet unknown processes.
Therefore, researchers hope that further analysis of the data collected by the InSight seismometer, as well as studying the structure of the rocks around the possible epicenter using the probes will help them understand how the mighty Marsotrus was formed which broke the record. .
It was earlier reported that the Martian helicopter Ingenuity flew over the Martian sky for the 60th time and broke its own record.
