China has successfully launched the Shenzhou-14 manned spacecraft carrying three crew to Tiangong National Orbital Station. This was reported by China Central Television on Sunday, June 5th.
The launch was conducted from the Jiuquan Cosmodrome in the north of the country at about 10:44 local time (05:44 Kyiv time) using the Changzheng-2F launch vehicle.
The crew includes two men – Chen Dong (commander) and Cai Xuzhe, as well as Liu Yang – the first female astronaut in the history of Chinese manned spaceflight. For Chen Dong and Liu Yang, this is the second flight into space. Cai Xuzhe entered orbit for the first time.
The crew will spend approximately six months at the station and return to Earth in December of this year. During this time, the construction of the orbital station will be completed. Two laboratory modules will be sent here – Wentian (in July) and Mengtian (in October). Both modules are equipped with special equipment for experiments and research. In addition, the Wentian module, like the main module of Tianhe station, has three sleeping areas, a bathroom and a kitchen, which will allow up to six astronauts to be accommodated at the station during the crew change.
By the end of the year, the Tianzhou-5 space truck and the Shenzhou-15 manned spacecraft will be launched at the station. Within a few hours, the two crews will be together at the station, after the shift, the Shenzhou-14 astronaut will return to Earth.
