The lenticular galaxy is located about 73 million light years from our planet.
The Hubble Space Telescope has revealed a galaxy known as NGC 3156, according to the ESA.
It is a lenticular galaxy and falls somewhere between an elliptical and a spiral galaxy. It is located about 73 million light years from Earth, in the constellation Sextant.
“It appears to form a faint gray concentric oval that gradually brightens toward the core and disappears near the edge. Two filaments of dark red dust cross the disk of the galaxy near the center. The background is black and almost empty, with only a few sharp stars and small galaxies”, ESA describes the image.
According to the observatory, Sextant is a small constellation belonging to the Hercules family of constellations. This constellation has its astronomical name because it is named after an instrument known as a sextant, which was invented in the 18th century.
“However, the sextant as an astronomical instrument is much older: Islamic scholars developed astronomical sextants many hundreds of years ago to measure angles in the sky. A particularly notable example is the massive sextant, with a radius of 36 meters, built by Ulugbek of the Timurid dynasty in Samarkand in modern-day Uzbekistan.” – said the message.
It is noted that currently, sextants are no longer used in modern astronomy; they have been replaced by instruments capable of measuring the position of stars and astronomical objects more precisely.
Hubble was previously reported to have photographed the M 89 galaxy, which consists of about 100 billion stars.
