The whole system is based on the practice of lucid dreaming: knowing that you are dreaming while you sleep.
The team at startup REMspace has created a combination of hardware and software that can decode a melody played by hand movements into a recorded one. Science Alert writes about it.
“The whole system is based on the practice of lucid dreaming: knowing that you are dreaming while you sleep. For decades researchers have been trying to unravel the process by which information is transferred to and from the brain during lucid dreaming. It is known that people. to remain blocked during sleep due to the normal loss of activity – simply put, we cannot physically play the guitar or tap the keyboard. However, sleepers can still be taught to move during sleep – this is what we did in the course of a new study,” said the developers.
According to them, four lucid dreamers were trained to reproduce musical rhythms by tensing the muscles of their arms, which were previously equipped with electromyography (EMG) sensors. The recipients were then asked to induce lucid dreams and repeat the task under laboratory supervision.
Participants were taught to play the rhythm of Queen’s “We Will Rock You” with their hands. As a result, three of them maintained this rhythm during sleep. These signals are processed by a special program to interpret the rhythm and reproduce the rhythm of the song.
“For this to be possible, people will need to practice lucid dreaming. However, statistics show that the majority of people on the planet have never experienced lucid dreaming. Until this technology is further developed, if desired “To remember melodies from dreams, you’ll need to hum a tune into a recording app as soon as you wake up – but this study shows there’s a lot of potential here,” the developers said.
