A second uterine transplant in the UK to another woman is scheduled for this autumn, with several more patients in the pipeline.
In the UK, surgeons performed the first womb transplant on a woman, allowing infertile women to have children. This was reported by The Guardian.
According to doctors, they are both “in seventh heaven” after a successful double operation, which will allow the younger sister to have children. She plans to give birth to two babies through IVF.
A 34-year-old woman is known to have been born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Kaster-Hauser syndrome (MRKH), a rare developmental disorder that causes girls to be born with underdeveloped genitalia and underdevelopment or complete absence of the uterus. Now she has received a donor uterus from her 40-year-old sister, who already has two children.
It is known that the transplant operation took place at the Oxford Transplant Center and lasted 9 hours and 20 minutes. Just ten days after the successful operation, the British woman was able to leave the hospital.
Before receiving her sister’s uterus, the woman went through ovulation induction cycles to obtain eggs, which were fertilized with her husband’s sperm to create embryos. Five embryos reach the blastocyst stage, which means the woman has a good chance of having a baby through IVF.
Now the woman will need to take immunosuppressants in her future pregnancy to prevent rejection of the donor organ.
As for the older sister, the operation, which involved more than 30 employees, began with the removal of the older sister’s uterus, which took eight hours and 12 minutes. An hour before the removal of the uterus, the surgeons began to operate on the younger sister.
It was previously reported that American Adriana Rodriguez, at the age of 31, underwent a revolutionary medical procedure that saved her life.
