The lack of communication with the International Space Station forced the agency to use Russian systems.
A power outage at NASA’s Houston building disrupted communications with the International Space Station (ISS). This was reported by The Guardian on July 26.
The incident happened the previous day and forced the space agency to launch backup control systems for the first time.
To inform the crew of the problem, NASA used the Russian communication system.
ISS program manager Joel Montalbano stressed that neither the astronauts nor the station were in danger – backup control systems maintained communication for 90 minutes.
“It was not a problem on board. It was a purely ground problem,” he assured.
Tensions between the US and Russia on Earth do not prevent their space agencies from cooperating, the newspaper wrote, although Moscow says it will withdraw from the ISS after 2024 and build its own station.
However, in December last year, Roscosmos submitted an official application to continue work on the International Space Station until 2028.
NASA intends to build a tug to deorbit the ISS
