Representatives of the American company Ocean Safaris filmed the horrific footage of the killing of an adult whale shark by a group of killer whales. It happened on the Pacific coast of Mexico, writes Live Science.
As you know, whale sharks are the largest sharks on our planet – they can grow up to 18 meters long.
The eyewitnesses first noticed a large whale shark, but after they swam close to it, they saw a school of killer whales – and one of them began to tear apart the whale shark’s lower body.
“Apparently, it was a young specimen, whose length was estimated to be about eight meters. Literally in a few seconds, the killer whale tore the shark apart and pulled out its liver to be eaten later. After that, the whale shark began to fall into bottom. Although the female was the first to attack the whale shark, “Mosquito believed that the alleged instigator of the attack was a great male who had previously been seen in the area, but with a different pack. This man was even given the name Montezuma, and after this attack on the shark, he and the group were spotted with the corpse of another whale shark,” experts said.
In the footage, you can see how the killer whale swims under the shark, bites it and blood flows from the wound. After that, the woman rose closer to the surface of the ocean, while the whale shark’s carcass sank to the bottom.
Notably, researchers have found a clue as to why the immune system of sharks is so effective that it helps to prevent diseases.
