The Maya are known for their achievements in architecture, culture, calendar systems, mathematics, and more.
A team of archaeologists using satellite imagery in the dense jungle of the Yucatán Peninsula has discovered a previously unrecorded Mayan city. Sciencealert reports.
The new city was named Okomtun, which means stone pillar.
On its territory there are squares, large buildings in the form of pyramids, stone columns, which can be entrances to upper rooms and other structures arranged in the form of concentric rings. There is also a ball court for recreational and possibly religious purposes.
According to scientists, the city was an important local center between 250 and 1000 AD, known as the classical period of the Mayan civilization.
Experts hope that analysis of ceramic pot fragments found at the excavation site should reveal when the region was inhabited.
