The villain’s all-seeing eye has also inspired names for a dung beetle, a frog, and even a dinosaur.
An international team of 30 scientists from around the world has been studying the needs of Euptychiina butterflies for a decade and discovered a new group of them. He is named after the villain Sauron from JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
“The choice fell on such a name due to the fact that this group of butterflies and the villain from Lord of the Rings have something in common, namely: the “sign of the all-seeing eye” is visible in the wings. The Scientists said they discovered that the black rings on orange-winged butterflies “remind them of the visible eye described in the book, and therefore they cannot make another choice,” said scientists.
The name was chosen by Dr. Blanca Hertam. He is considered the keeper of butterflies in the museum.
It is noted that these butterflies are not the only ones named after the villain Sauron.
