Fake extortion calls can become more and more real with artificial intelligence (AI).
Jennifer DeEstefano, mother from Arizona, USAnearly ordered to pay a $50,000 extortion to protect the life of her daughter, who had apparently been kidnapped.
A voice equal to your daughter’s voice with artificial intelligence
“Mom, I screwed up!” – heard the mother on the phone in a voice identical to the voice of her daughter.
Then the man says: “Let your head back, lie down” and says to the mother: “Listen to me. I have your daughter. Here’s what will happen. Call the police, whoever it is, I’ll hurt her and leave her in Mexico”.
In the background, he hears the crying voice of his daughter: “Help me, mom. Please help.”
Jennifer DeEstefano never doubted for a second that her daughter was in danger. “There was never any question about who he was. It was entirely his voice. It was his tone. It was the way I would cry,” he said. Family from A to Z.
After the mother was asked for a million dollars, the mother negotiated a $50,000 ransom.
But after calling her husband, DeEstefano was able to find out that her daughter was safe and sound with him.
The intended daughter was a voice generated by iartificial intelligence (AI).
“You can no longer trust your ears,” said Subbarao Kambhampati, a professor of computer science at Arizona State University.
“At the beginning, a large number of samples were required. Now there are ways to achieve this (imitate the voice very accurately). Now there are ways to achieve this with just three seconds of your voice. Three seconds, he warned.
The expert also warned that most voice clones can pick up intonations just as well as emotions.
