The American space agency NASA announced on Monday, April 3, the names of the four astronauts expected to fly around the moon in 2024 as part of the Artemis-2 mission.
The lunar mission included three Americans Christina Koch, Victor Glover and Reed Wiseman, as well as Canadian Jeremy Hansen.
NASA emphasized that the four astronauts will be the first humans to fly to the moon in more than 50 years. The crew of the lunar mission for the first time included a woman, an African American and a Canadian.
The New York Times writes that the flight to the moon will take place no earlier than November 2024. The Artemis-2 lunar mission will last ten days.
Once launched, the second stage of the SLS space launch vehicle will place the Orion spacecraft into an elliptical orbit that will pass up to 2,900 kilometers above Earth.
The spacecraft will approach the Moon, but will not enter its orbit, but instead, using lunar gravity, will return to Earth.
Recall that on November 21, 2022, the Orion spacecraft of the Artemis 1 mission approached the moon as close as possible.
The Artemis program was published in September 2020. The main goal of the program is to return American astronauts to the lunar surface 53 years after the last mission and prepare the conditions for a possible colonization of the Moon in the future.
