Amazon announced the formal purchase of a primary health care provider One Medical for $3.9 billion.
The company has long had ambitions to expand the healthcare industry and with this company it is trying to achieve this goal.
Amazon and health
Amazon agreed in July last year to purchase One Medical to deepen its presence in the healthcare industry and “significantly improve” the healthcare experience.
In previous acquisitions, he bought online pharmacy PillPack in 2018 for $750 million and then launched his own virtual clinic for chronic disease and prescription benefits for Prime members.
Now the current agreement gives Amazon access to over 200 physical medical rooms One doctor in 26 markets and about 815 thousand participants.
In a statement, CEO Andy Jassi said healthcare is prepared for this disruption, citing long admission times and the complexity of primary care.
“Customers want and deserve the best and that’s where we One Medical has been operating and innovating for more than a decade,” Jassi said in a statement. “Together we believe we can make health care easier, faster, more personalized and more convenient for everyone.”
Discounts for patients
In the United States Amazon indicated that he would reduce the price of membership in One Medical $200 to $150 the first year, whether or not they’re a Prime subscriber.
Closing occurs after the deadline set by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to contest the agreement.
“The Federal Trade Commission’s investigation into the acquisition of One Medical To Amazon continues,” said FTC spokesman Douglas Farrar. “The Commission will continue its analysis of the potential harm to competition created by this merger, as well as the potential harm to consumers that could result from the control and use of Amazon confidential consumer health information held One Medical”.
