The previous record was held by a hedgehog seven years younger. He lives in Ireland.
In Denmark, the oldest hedgehog in the world was found. They turned out to be a 16-year-old European hedgehog Torvald. This was reported by The Guardian.
The animal lived in the Danish Silkeborg. Researchers were surprised by the hedgehog’s age.
“I cried with joy when I held a specimen that lived for 16 years in my hands. This is very good news from an ecological point of view. Under the right conditions, hedgehogs can live for about 16 years – it was amazing. All my colleagues laughed, because they thought I was too emotional,” said the scientists.
It is known that in 2016 Torvald died. He lives in a Danish wildlife rehabilitation center after being the target of a dog attack.
“From the bites received on the back and abdomen, Torvald got an infection, his reproductive organ also suffered, the dimensions of which, by the way, impressed us. In all other respects, healthy Torvald – evidence that these prickly mammals can live longer than 16 years “, – told the Center.
It was also mentioned that Thorwald was one of 700 such animals found by 400 volunteers.
Recall that earlier the authorities of New Zealand declared war against hedgehogs, which were brought to the country by British colonialists many years ago, and bred in large numbers due to the lack of predators.
