Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRMby English abbreviation) wrote a letter to the US Department of Transportation against Neuralink, a startup Elon Musk which aims to create a brain-computer interface, they say it shows the potentially illegal movement of dangerous pathogens.
The letter, seen by Reuters, states that Neuralink moves implants taken from the brains of monkeys that could transmit infectious diseases in violation of federal law.
Neurolink is in trouble again
According to the complaint, pathogens such as antibiotic-resistant staphylococcus and herpes B viruses were found in the records, which could have been transported without proper containment measures.
PCRM he also noted that pathogens are transferred to implants removed after improper disinfection and packaging. This can cause serious health problems in infected people, such as bloodstream infections, pneumonia, and severe brain damage.
Incidents related to possible violations of the rules for the transport of hazardous materials occurred in 2019, when Neuralink According to the documents cited, he relied on UC Davis to help him conduct his experiments on primates.
Although said collaboration ended in 2020, PCRM indicated that the company Elon Musk he continues to hire a neurosurgeon to direct the experiments.
This is not the first complaint.
PCRM expressed concern about Neuralink in past. Last year, he wrote to federal officials about alleged animal welfare issues during a research partnership with UC Davis, citing a different set of records he received.
In December, the publication also reported that Neuralink is under federal investigation for possible violations of animal rights, and that some of its employees have filed internal complaints about hasty experiments that have caused them unnecessary suffering and death.
