The British Heritage Agency has announced that it has succeeded in establishing the origin of the mysterious boat from the 17th century, discovered in 2019 at the bottom of the sea off the coast of England.

An aura of mystery has surrounded this 32-meter vessel since its discovery.

After many years of research, scientists from Historic England managed to identify it as “Klein Holland”, a boat Dutch warship sunk by the British in 1672.

“State boat This is more than remarkable and can provide us with interesting information about how Dutch ships were built in the 17th century and what happened on board,” Historic England said in a statement.

According to the British agency, which conducted the investigation in collaboration with underwater archaeologists and Dutch scientists, they found “a significant part of its wooden structure, cannons, Italian marble bricks and pieces of Italian ceramics” at the bottom of the sea.

Scientists have examined these remains to determine the origin of the ship.

“Klein Holland”, which participated in all major battles of the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-1677), was sunk while transporting a cargo of marble bricks.

He was sailing from the Mediterranean to a Dutch port when he was attacked by an English squadron.

After the death of his captain in battle, English sailors took control. But according to Historic England, the boat was wrecked.

Its sinking, according to the British agency, contributed to the start of the third war between England and Netherlands, which contested control of maritime trade between the 17th and 18th centuries. (AFP)
