The study shows that more than a third of the Amazon rainforest has been destroyed due to human activity.
Scientists from the University of East Anglia and Lancaster University found that almost 40% of the Earth’s “green lungs” are affected in the Amazon. They called it “degradation,” according to the Daily Mail.
Researchers have studied the consequences of the “degradation” process, which includes deforestation, mining, fires, widening of roads and human activities that harm nature.
So, it turns out that 38% of the rest of the Amazon rainforest, in most cases, has been destroyed by humans.
“This is more than previously thought. Note that the new study follows the appointment of the new President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who promised to provide better protection to the Earth’s green lungs. We used of satellite imagery and scientific analysis about changes in the region in the period from 2001 to 2018. The process of destruction of the Amazon is not well understood, but this process benefits very few, while harming the majority, “said the scientists.
As you know, the Amazon covers 5.4 square kilometers and is located in eight countries:
-
Brazil;
-
Bolivia;
-
Peru;
-
Ecuador;
-
Colombia;
-
Venezuela;
-
Guyana;
-
Suriname.
At the same time, most of them are located within the borders of Brazil.
Based on satellite data, it has been found that Earth’s “green lungs” in the Amazon are shrinking due to four main factors:
-
forest fires;
-
selective cleanings;
-
Severe drought;
-
“edge effect”, changes occurring in adjacent areas.
Remember that the Amazon rainforest could become a dry plain, where only rare shrubs will grow, by 2064. This will happen not only because of the climate, but also will have a human hand, predicted University of Florida professor Robert Walker.
