A spaceport near the Swedish city of Kiruna should complement the EU’s ability to launch satellites from a spaceport in French Guiana.
EU authorities and Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf inaugurated the European Union’s first mainland spaceport for launching satellites. The AP reported this on Friday, January 13.
It is indicated that the new facility at the Esrange Space Center near the Swedish city of Kiruna should complement the EU’s existing ability to launch satellites from the spaceport in French Guiana.
In her speech, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said small satellites are critical for real-time monitoring of natural disasters and help ensure global security in light of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
“Today we know that the brave Ukrainian military is effectively using small satellites to monitor the movements of Russian troops,” he said.
The first satellite launch from a spaceport in Sweden is expected next year.

Recall that the British authorities granted a license to the Cornwall spaceport. Now he will be able to carry out the first launch of an orbital satellite in the history of the country.
Earlier this week, Virgin Orbit performed the first ever spacecraft launch from UK soil. But the LauncherOne rocket did not enter orbit.
