More than 18 thousand employees will be laid off from Amazon according to its CEO Andy Jassi.
In a blog post, the executive noted that “they are cutting more jobs than planned.” Early reports pointed to 10,000 layoffs.
layoffs are on the rise
Amazon expands layoffs to 18,000 positions.
Yassi notes that most of the layoffs will be in the recruiting and retail departments. If that happens, it would be the biggest wave of layoffs in recent months, involving more than 11,000 Meta employees.
The CEO noted that the company will be contacting affected employees starting January 18, so the layoffs are likely to come in the coming weeks. He added that Amazon it will offer them packages that include “severance pay, transitional health insurance benefits and employment assistance.”
Unfavorable Context
Amazon he was greatly helped by the boom that emerged at the height of the pandemic, with a record number of online purchases.
For this reason, the company has been hiring more frequently to keep up with demand.
However, in the last months of the recession and with a gradual return to pre-pandemic daily life, the numbers have normalized and Amazon began cutting spending so as not to create a deficit in his records.
After freezing new employees, he also closed physical stores and even commercial divisions.
