“An amazing miracleThis Monday’s British daily Metro headlines a photo of Guanyu Zhou’s Alfa Romeo on the “roof” of Silverstone, the temple of cross-channel motor racing. A Chinese driver came close to the worst in a horrific crash at the start of the British Grand Prix on Sunday.
In pictures released by the Formula 1 manufacturers, the single seats of Pierre Gasly (Alfa Tauri), George Russell (Mercedes) and Guanyu Zhou (Alfa-Romeo) came into contact as they approached the first corner. Zhou’s one-seater, hit by Russell, flipped to finish his race on the other side of the safety barriers against the fences separating the track from the spectators.

Meanwhile, Alexander Albon (Williams), Esteban Ocon, as well as German Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) and Japanese Yuki Tsunoda (Alfa Tauri) were also indirectly involved in the accident; Williams was sent against the barriers as the pilot tried to slow down.
After a few minutes of agony, Zhou managed to get out of his car and then was taken to the medical center, where the reassuring news was quickly relayed: “I’m fine, everything is clear. Halo saved me,” the Chinese driver said on Twitter shortly after leaving the UK Regional Medical Center where Albon was also being treated.
