TALAHASEY, Florida (AP) – Officials say a neighbor of a gay rights activist in the Florida room was accused of strangling him and dumping his body in a rural Florida landfill.
Last week in Leon County, a grand jury indicted Stephen Inger, 37, with a long criminal history. Inger was on Tuesday without a prison sentence in Le ლე n County in several cases, including first-degree murder in the death of Jorge Diaz-Johnston.
Prosecutors say Inger was with Diaz-Johnston, 54, at the time of the murder. Diaz-Johnston is the brother of former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and uncle of former University of Miami football manager Manny Diaz II.
In October, Inger was released from prison and transferred to Diaz-Johnston, known for helping people with their healing process, a Democrat from Tallahassee. Reported. She is also a supporter of the legal struggle for marriage equality.
Diaz-Johnston was last seen alive on Jan. 3 and disappeared on Jan. 7, according to police and court records. His body was found Jan. 8 in a Jackson County landfill near Tallahassee.
Inger was arrested Jan. 13 on a murder charge in Leon County.
“I appreciate the hard jury’s hard work and we will work hard to do him and his family justice,” Jack Campbell, state attorney general in Leon County said last week.
The Leon County Public Defender’s Office, representing Inger, did not respond to an email about the case.
Diaz-Johnston and Don Johnston sued the Miami District Court Chancellor for the right to marry and won in 2015. They separated before Diaz-Johnson died.
