The U.S. House of Representatives Committee passed a bill Wednesday that would ban the dissemination of false or deceptive material resembling census forms or other material that prevents people from participating in the nation’s census.
The Democrat -controlled House Oversight and Reform Committee sent the event to a House meeting to curb the spread of disinformation related to the six -monthly census. Violators are liable to civil penalties.
A few months before the final census began in March 2020, the Republican National Committee sent an email mimicking the U.S. Census Form and requesting donations for President Donald Trump’s re -election. The Republican National Committee at the time said the mailers were clearly marked as coming from the GOP.
Montana officials issued a warning about sending mail, saying they could confuse people by making them think they filled out a census form when they didn’t.
“No one should use description to confuse or deceive people for any reason,” said Carolyn Maloney, a New York Democrat who chairs the oversight committee.
Republicans on the committee said the law is unnecessary because there are already laws alleging fraud.
“It’s a duplicate and unnecessary,” said Ralph Norman, a Republican from South Carolina.
