Senator John Cornyn (R. of Texas) on Saturday sparked outrage and defended various law enforcement officials involved in a Texas state school shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers.
Frustration, anger and questions followed the police response to the shooting at Rob Elementary on Tuesday. It has been more than an hour since the killer entered the school and when U.S. border patrol officers opened the classroom door and killed him. While they waited inside, the children inside and the teachers inside called emergency services again and asked for police help.
Outside the building, according to witnesses, police beat, handcuffed and sprayed pepper on angry parents who asked them to attend school. Some parents said they themselves went to the school to arrest the children without the police taking action. A police spokesman told CNN on Thursday that officers were slowly confronting the attacker because “they might have shot him.”
The director of the Texas Department of Public Safety admitted Friday that the “wrong decision” was to wait. And in an unusual move, the Justice Department said it will investigate responses from law enforcement.
But Cornyn said people are so cruel to decision makers that inaction will almost certainly lead to more deaths.

Among the many responses on his Twitter account was Fred Gutenberg, a gun control activist whose daughter Jamie was shot and killed in 2018 in Parkland, Florida.
“If not for the lack of response from police in Parkland, [Jaime] “And others will live today,” he wrote. “The facts show that if it weren’t for the failed response to Waldeville, they would have killed fewer people.”
“It’s also fair to say that without the defeat of senators like you, these shootings wouldn’t have happened,” he added.
Republican senators are blocking two bills passed by the House that would tighten gun control laws and extend control over the initial conditions for firearms purchases. Cornwall is Among the top 10 members of Congress, which has received the largest number of election donations from arms rights lobbyists.
He planned to speak at the NRA Congress in Houston over the weekend, but walked away from his office schedule due to a conflict.
