He plenary session of the Congress on Tuesday to debate and vote to approve a no-confidence vote against Interior Minister Vicente Romero over national police intervention on campus National University of San Marcos (UNMSM), which occurred on January 21, to evict the protesters. These people came to Lima to take part in the marches against President Dina Boluarte.
The reasons for this censorship are based on the fact that Vicente Romero “bears political responsibility for the abuse of power and disproportionate use of force by the police.” In addition, they accuse him of “lack of leadership and unsuitability to lead the sector under his jurisdiction.”
“Censor the Lord Vincent Romero FernandezMinister of the Interior, holding him politically responsible for the abuse of power and disproportionate use of force by the Peruvian National Police during the intervention in National University of San Marcos January 21, 2023, demonstrating a lack of leadership and unsuitability to lead the sector under its jurisdiction,” the petition reads.
On the morning of Saturday, January 21, police officers entered National University of San Marcos to evict protesters from different regions of the country. More than 200 people were arrested, but they were released a day later, when no criminal records were found.
San Marcos criticized the police intervention and said in a statement that “it has caused property damage to infrastructure and physical and psychological harm to the community of residents.”
No-confidence vote authored by MP Cathy Ugarte (not grouped) and signed by Sucel Paredes (Not grouped), María Aguero (Free Peru), Valdemar Cerrón (Free Peru), Sigrid Bazan (Democratic change together for Peru), Guillermo Bermejo (Democratic Peru), Hector Valer (We Peru). ) ), among other legislators.
The petition mentions that at that time the balance prepared by Ombudsman on social protest from December 2022 to March 2023, during which searches were revealed that did not comply with the principles of necessity, proportionality, legality and reasonableness.
Vicente Romero addressed the plenary session of Congress on March 9 to respond to two interpellation statements about this controversial police operation.
Romero leaves the position without any problems
Minister of the Interior Vicente Romero issued a censorship decision against him and indicated that he had abided by the law throughout his life, so if the proposal was approved in Parliament, he would not object to the decision.
“I answered all the questions in the three interpellations they gave me and the result I should have done. I have been a citizen all my life, I have kept the law, and if I have to leave the interior sector, I will have to leave it, I have no problem,” he said during a press conference.
