Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrardpointed out as “unreasonable and reprehensible” the decision of the Peruvian Foreign Ministry to declare the Mexican Ambassador to Peru, Pablo Monroy, persona non grata and give him 72 hours to leave the country.

“Ambassador Pablo Monroy in Lima informs me that the Peruvian government has given him 72 hours to leave the country. I consider this decision unreasonable and reprehensible. The behavior of our ambassador was subject to the law and the principle of non-intervention. Mexico will not change its position,” Marcelo Ebrard wrote on his social networks.

That is, Ebrard believed that Pablo Monroy did not interfere in the political situation in the country and complied with the law, having learned about the political asylum that his country provided to the wife and children of former President Pedro Castillo.

By decision of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ana Gervasi Mexican government ordered his ambassador to Peru, Pablo Monroy Conese, to return to his country “to ensure his safety and physical integrity.”

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs instructed the Ambassador Pablo Monroy Conesa come back Mexico to protect their safety and physical integrity. The Embassy of Mexico in Peru will be overseen by Carla’s first secretary, Tatiana Ornelas Loera, current head of mission’s office. Our Representative Office will continue to work as usual after this relocation,” the message says.

Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru

Ana Cecilia Gervasi, The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru decided to apply this measure after “the repeated statements by the highest authorities of this country about the political situation in Peru, which constitute interference in our internal affairs and therefore violate the principle of non-intervention.”

Gervasi stated that the Mexican government had also been briefed on the safety of the president’s wife. Pedro Castillo and their children, stressing that there was no political persecution against them.

“The Government of Mexico has been informed by this Ministry of Foreign Affairs that Lilia Paredes brought to criminal responsibility as a co-executor of the crime of a criminal organization. The government strongly declares the absence of political persecution and the prevalence of the rule of law, separation of powers and respect for the guarantees of the administration of justice, including due process,” the official added.

Lilia Paredes at the embassy

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard confirmed on Tuesday that the family of detained former President Pedro Castillo is at his country’s embassy in Peru, located in Lima’s San Isidro district, after receiving political asylum.

Accompanied by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador at a press conference, Ebrad emphasized that granting political asylum was an “independent” and “sovereign” decision by the Mexican government.

“Asylum has already been granted. [a la familia de Pedro Castillo] because they are in Mexican territory, that is, in our embassy. And when they are in the embassy, you give them asylum. This is an independent and sovereign decision by Mexico,” he told local media.
