Kingston DataTraveler Duo Review. Universal flash drive for computers and smartphones

0

The Kingston DataTraveler Duo is a new fast flash drive with a pair of useful connectors and a folding mechanism. In this short review, we will look at its features, find out the speed of reading and writing. And we will also decide what it is for and who is it for.

Packaging

The Kingston DataTraveler Duo flash drive was released in late 2020 and is part of the Kingston DataTraveler line. The USB drive is sold in a blister with a plastic window, which is usual for this segment.

Appearance

The Kingston DataTraveler Duo is slightly larger than conventional flash drives. It’s all about two USB Type-A and Type-C connectors, as well as a folding protective structure.

If desired, each of them individually, or two together, can be hidden in a sliding mechanism. Convenient if you put a USB flash drive in your pocket or bag with other things. So the connectors will not touch anything, they will not get tangled anywhere, they will not be scratched, and so on. True, there is still a chance that small debris will fall into them, because they are not closed from above.

The same design does not provide for a cap that is always lost, but there is no place for attaching a rope or for keys, a carabiner and other common places.

Features and tests

Kingston DataTraveler Duo received 57.6 GB of free space. It is convenient to connect it to both regular USB-A and USB Type-C. The model supports USB 3.2 Gen 1.

Ideally, take speed measurements in such a port, but my laptop only has USB 3.1, so put a little on top to the indicators below if you have the latest USB version.

Through CrystalDisk, the results came out as follows: read speed 108 MB / s, and write 28 MB / s.

Then I took a 1.62 GB folder and copied it first from the M.2 SSD to the USB flash drive, and then from it back to the disk.

In the first case, the minimum speed was 7 MB / s, and the maximum speed was 24 MB / s. In the second, the minimum is 34 MB / s, and the maximum is 102 MB / s.

Kingston DataTraveler Duo connects not only to PCs, laptops and other computers. The flash drive works with tablets and smartphones, especially if they have a USB Type-C port. Alternatively, you can connect using an adapter.

In my case, I was unable to measure the read / write speed on my Samsung Galaxy M31s. The smartphone recognized the USB flash drive and worked with it without problems, but neither the A1 bench application nor other similar metering programs saw it.

I can only say approximate speed measurements from colleagues. Through the A1 bench, the DataTraveler Duo USB drive averaged 17.7 MB / s read and 8.2 MB / s write. Of course, this is not a memory card, but the result is quite adequate.

Outcomes

Kingston DataTraveler Duo is a modern USB flash drive for all tasks and with the possibility of universal connection. Its large memory and exFAT file system allow it to quickly write impressive amounts of data and almost as quickly upload it to other devices.

A flash drive is useful as an encrypted key to enter, as an installation flash drive, as a place to store programs in Portable versions, as a means of playing large multimedia on TVs and set-top boxes, as a place for backups, APK libraries, and so on. …

The Kingston DataTraveler Duo is not the smallest USB stick out there. But it looks modern, it is equipped with a movable mechanism for protecting the connectors, however, it is not equipped with places for attaching to various objects. If you already have a flash drive with a similar amount of memory, then it is hardly worth switching to this model. The speed here, of course, is higher, but this is unlikely to be enough to make a purchase decision.

And if you are thinking of upgrading a 4, 8 or 16 or 32 GB “old lady”, want to find a replacement for a lost flash drive or just buy a new one, then Kingston DataTraveler Duo is an adequate option for all cases.

Main characteristics:

Volume: 32 or 64 GB

Connection connectors: USB Type-А и Type-C

USB 3.2 Gen 1 support: there is

Guarantee: 5 years

The weight: 10 g

Dimensions: 64.05 x 21.2 x 10.4 mm

Interview with Frank Grillo for the movie “Trigger Day”

0

On March 11, Boss Level, a new comedy thriller by Joe Carnahan, will be released in Russian cinemas. The director of “Skirmish” and “Smokin ‘Aces” has been working closely with Frank Grillo for a long time. It was he who got the role of Roy Pulver, a former military man stuck in a time loop and forced to die at the hands of killers over and over again. They asked a few questions to Crossbones from Marvel, the harsh trainer from Kingdom and the most charming character in “Doomsday” – and at the same time they found out what roles he dreams of playing at 70 years old.

– Congratulations on the release of a great movie! How did Joe Carnahan manage to lure you into this project, what attracted you to it?

– And he did not lure. Joe Carnahan and I worked on The Gray many years ago. After Fight, we wanted to make this film, but we couldn’t do it. In the end, Joe and I formed the production company Warparty Pictures, and this is our sixth film together. My favorite director is also my business partner.

For almost a decade we have been constantly returning to the idea of ”Day of the Kurk”, and now both have finally earned enough trust to invest in our film.

Liam Neeson and Frank Grillo in The Gray

– One of the most memorable scenes of the film is a kind of intro, when Roy wakes up over and over again and repeats the same set of actions. Was it filmed many times?

– Yes, we had to shoot the first scene a bunch of times – every awakening I had to do something new. So she was the most repetitive on set. Although, for example, we shot the jump from the window into the sand truck from one take.

– Probably, everything took no longer than the stage with the elevator from “The First Avenger: Another War”? You said it was filmed for six days.

“Oh no, it was much longer than six days. But they didn’t beat me like they did in this elevator!

– From the outside, it seems that “Day of the Trigger” was incredibly fun to shoot. Especially repetitive elements, as with Celina Law and her catchphrase (Celina Law played one of the hitmen – ed.). How do you keep your face on the set? Wearing a tough guy look?

– No-no, I’m usually on the set that still gouges. Joe and I love to have fun and always try to make it fun on the set: a lot of music, a lot of laughter. Sometimes we joke that having so much fun and then getting paid for it is just illegal.

– Sounds like the right approach.

– Yes, in such a business it is better to have fun, otherwise it makes no sense. Even if the film doesn’t succeed, it’s always fun to get involved in the process. I never come to the set thinking, “I wish I hadn’t been here.”

Frank Grillo and Mel Gibson on the set of Day of the Trigger

– The entire film is imbued with the spirit of video games, from its structure to the Street Fighter competition in the underground club. The logical question is: how closely are you familiar with games?

– Of course, I played all these games when I was a child. But in general, my real guide to this world is my son Rio, he is a serious gamer. He specially equipped his room for this and devotes a lot of time to this, so all my knowledge is from him.

And so, I have something to do only with old games, with everything retro that is in the film.

– By the way, about Rio – it is he who plays your son in the film and spends quite a long time on the screen. Does he have any kind of passion for acting?

– You know, Rio had a passion before, before the film. He really liked filming and acting, he made amateur films with his friends, he even wrote scripts.

And now he’s a gamer! Trigger Day comes out, and I tell Rio, “You know, now you might be offered other roles as well.” And he replies: “Well, no, I don’t want to … Unless if Marvel calls.” He has very clear requests.

Grillo as Crossbones, the villain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

– Are there any famous images in action movies that you would like to try on yourself? Or maybe time for more dramatic roles? Roy got a lot more depth in the film than is usually the case in entertaining action films.

– You know, at my advanced age I really like to shoot action. I will stay on this path as long as possible, as much as it makes sense at all. My mate, Liam Neeson, has been doing cool roles for almost 70 years – I want to follow in his footsteps if I can.

TES 6, New Vegas 2 and Quake from Carmack. What does the deal between Microsoft and Bethesda mean for gamers?

0

On September 21, 2020 Microsoft announced the purchase of ZeniMax Media, which owns Bethesda, Arkane, id Software, MachineGames and several other small studios. The deal itself, which is estimated at $ 7.5 billion, was closed in March 2021 – but all these are formalities that ultimately mean little to players.

Much more interesting is what this deal may lead to in the future. And it is possible, of course, that everything was started only in order to make The Elder Scrolls VI exclusive to Microsoft, but this would be an obvious and, perhaps, the most uninteresting scenario. Let’s think about what else this could mean for all of us.

Right now, this deal is an ingenious marketing ploy that means about nothing.

The agreement between Microsoft and ZeniMax Media is indeed almost a “deal of the century” for the gaming industry and everyone involved, but right now it is primarily a brilliant marketing move in the “war” of next-generation consoles. Neither Microsoft, Bethesda, nor other ZeniMax Media studios announced any new games or made any announcements about their future releases – and more importantly, the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X games lineup on launch day.

And if before it seemed to you that Microsoft had nothing to “cover” Sony, which already had a remake of Demon’s Souls (2020) at the launch, which can not be played anywhere except on the PlayStation 5, now there is hardly anything to your opinion. should affect. The actual balance of power in this “war”, despite the high-profile deal, remained the same. And those looking to buy a new Xbox will buy a new Xbox. And those who were going to go to the store for the PS5 will go after her.

Or not?

The very fact that Microsoft, thanks to this deal, sometime in the future can make the new The Elder Scrolls its exclusive, or, say, give Arkane money to develop Prey 2, means more to many than the opportunity to play a remake of Demon’s Souls on PlayStation 5 …

And that’s okay – I say, a brilliant marketing ploy.

The exclusivity of TES 6 cannot be ruled out

Phil Spencer has already stated that some of the games being created and will be created by Zenimax studios will become PC and Xbox exclusives. However, he has not yet mentioned specific names. Nevertheless, the network has already started talking that the new games of Bethesda itself – the same TES 6 – can only be released on Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X and Windows.

And yes, such a possibility cannot be ruled out, since no one has argued otherwise, but do not forget that Microsoft itself has not used exclusives as a final argument in console “wars” for a long time.

Instead, it is developing a service – that is, an ecosystem in which there are PCs on Windows and Xbox (and more recently, smartphones), and its own Game Pass subscription with a huge library of games. The company still has formal exclusives – the same Halo, Forza and Gears of War exist only within the ecosystem described above on PC and Xbox and have never appeared on Sony consoles. But in the end, their conditional exclusivity is not as important as the fact that all new games from these series appear in Game Pass on release day.

And if you actively use the service, play a lot of games and perceive Game Pass as “Netflix for games”, the availability of new projects on release day without additional costs and problems plays an important role. It is clear that the subscription still costs money, but the Game Pass for a year costs several times less than the announced PS5 exclusives at the moment all together. And on a subconscious level, when you already have a subscription, the opportunity to play a game by “gamepass” is associated with the word “free”. Of course, not free, but the game appeared in Game Pass, you don’t pay for it separately, you just download and play.

And given the fact that all new games from Bethesda and other Zenimax studios will appear in Game Pass, for many, I’m sure a much more attractive option would be to play The Elder Scrolls 6 on Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S through this service. , and not buy it on PS5 for 5-6 thousand rubles. And there will be no difference, whether this is an exclusive game or not.

On the other hand, Microsoft can do just about anything. She has already said that the PS5 will retain the temporary exclusivity of Deathloop (she is not so generous, and the previously concluded agreements seem to be binding). And also – that the availability of all future games on different platforms will be discussed after the fact. It can be either temporary exclusivity, or complete, or exclusivity for some of the content.

In addition, Phil Spencer, with the same sly smile, first gives the go-ahead to Halo: Infinite for Xbox Series X, after which he announces Minecraft Dungeons, which will also be released on PS4, and then “releases” both parts of Ori on Switch. So it’s really too early to think about it – anything can happen.

Games that previously could only be dreamed of can now become reality

This deal, among other things, opens up a lot of opportunities for developers and, possibly, involves additional budgets – including the creation of games that Bethesda would not have spent before.

This is The Evil Within 3: the second part is one of the best survival horror stories of our time, which did not bring the expected sales. And, for example, Prey 2 is the main immersive sim game to date, which also fell short of sales expectations. It is also a sequel to Dishonored, or an offshoot in the same universe, but with different heroes.

This is Fallout: New Vegas 2: the game may well return to Obsidian – both the studio itself and the rights to the series are now in the hands of Microsoft.

These are the new Quake and Doom from John Carmack: the creator of both series has already expressed the hope that in the future he will be able to work on id Software games again.

Cool! Until now, Microsoft has been a good parent company for many studios with great games. And she has nothing against me, so maybe I can work on my old games again in the future.

This is Fallout Online (not Fallout 76, but a normal game): the same The Elder Scrolls Online proved to be excellent, pleasing both those who wanted to play it in the MMO, and those who were waiting for a single adventure.

There are many more games that one might not even be aware of.

Microsoft has all the best developers

Few people think about it, but right now Microsoft is working:

  • Tim Schaefer – Founder of Double Fine, Full Throttle and Grim Fandango writer, Psychonauts and Brütal Legend creator, Jack Black’s best friend;
  • Brian Fargo – founder of inXile, creator of Torment: Tides of Numenera and Wasteland 2 and Wasteland 3;
  • Tim Kane – Writer Obsidian, creator of Fallout, founder of the now closed Troika Games and head of development for The Outer Worlds;
  • Leonard Boyarski – Tim Kane’s colleague, Fallout and Diablo 3 designer, co-creator of The Outer Worlds;
  • Todd Howard – Producer of Bethesda Game Studios, head of development for The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind, Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, the hero of numerous memes about “Skyrim”;
  • Harvey Smith – Arkane Game Designer, Deus Ex Designer and Dishonored Creative Lead
  • Shinji Mikami – Founder of Tango Gameworks, creator of the Resident Evil series, The Evil Within, currently working on GhostWire: Tokyo;
  • Hugo martin – Creative Director of id Software and the last two Doom installments;
  • And many more developers who donated games like We Happy Few, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Forza Motorsport, Gears 5 and so on.

All of these people could well make some of the most important next generation games. And these games will be owned by Microsoft.

Review of 2 episodes of the series “Debris” (Debris)

0

On March 1, NBC and Amediatek began airing Debris. The leading roles include the incredibly talented, but lacking title roles, Jonathan Tucker, and the creators – the writers of “The Edge”, “Hannibal”, “Almost Human” and other curious shows. We’ll tell you why you should pay attention to “Wreckage”, despite the simple formula and minimalistic style.

A good part of the sci-fi genre rests on the interaction of earthlings with aliens of all sorts, stripes and moods. Sometimes humanity learns to dominate them, as in “District 9”, sometimes the alien invasion is completely irreversible, as in “Annihilation” by Alex Garland.

Debris somehow occupies a niche between Annihilation and, oddly enough, The X-Files. This is both a good interpretation of “evil and strange aliens from outer space” and an interesting procedural with tense moments. Although the very plot of the series is most easily explained by “Roadside Picnic” by the Strugatskys (who are well known abroad).

The idea is quite simple: somewhere above the Earth (completely similar to ours, ordinary Earth) a spaceship crashed. The debris was scattered across the planet, and rather quickly revealed unusual properties. Months later, all earthly intelligence services hastily collect the remains of the ship in different corners of the Earth so that they “do not fall into the wrong hands.”

The plot revolves around a team of two such debris-hunting operatives – Finola Jones (Rianne Steele) of MI6 and Brian Benvenety (Jonathan Tucker) of the CIA. International collaboration turns out to be more enjoyable than they both expect: in the very first episode, Finola and Brian talk heart to heart and get along well, so there is more time for their intriguing adventures.

Things for them are really interesting, moderately frightening, strange, but without excesses. The fact is that each wreck of the ship has its own peculiarity: for example, in one of the first scenes, the hotel maid accidentally touches this artifact and immediately falls fourteen floors down. So the fragments of the ship pose a danger to others – and are very valuable on the black market, which is actively hunting for them.

The creators of “Flinders” do not overdo it with graphics, do not exploit the most common clichés from similar films and series. NBC can hardly boast of a blockbuster budget, so all the effects here are spent sparingly and wisely. Even the aliens themselves are not in the frame, at least in the first two episodes.

But there are things that are not too scary, but definitely tickling the nerves – bodies flying over the surface of the earth, a refrigerator crawling through the whole city, or a one-on-one meeting with their double.

The main characters of “Flinders” are divided, as is often the case, into the so-called “skeptic and believer”, but very conditionally. The characters, even if they turned out to be a little one-dimensional, but healthy skepticism and at the same time the ability to surprise, feel and empathize with both is enough. So Finola and Brian won’t have a second Mulder and Scully, but that’s for the best.

They are separated by other factors: experience and occupation. Finola’s father was one of the first scientists to see the wreckage. After his death, the woman decided to continue his work, considering everything that happens from a scientific angle. Because of this, Finola does not always have time to stop in time – in the first episode, she falls under the influence of the splinter (however, in the second, Brian also gets it).

But her American partner has been working for the CIA for a long time and has a military career behind him. This makes Brian more composed and tough, but not callous. He constantly has colleagues on the wire, who are simultaneously conducting a secret investigation – so secret that no one should know about him, not even Finola.

This is another easy confusion and intrigue, which will last for a maximum of a season. And yet, because of her, watching the interaction of the characters is more interesting. And Jonathan Tucker brilliantly withstands all the moments when his partner opens up to his character – and he, in response, no, no, yes, slows down, as if he wants to reveal an unpleasant secret to her. But then Brian blinks, sighs and shakes off the moment as if nothing had happened.

A huge plus of “Flinders” is precisely in the rate on the actors’ play and the relative simplicity of the plot. One episode per episode, one main intrigue and a whole story – this is what the procedures are good for. Moreover, the episodes are built really well, catching at the level of a strong thriller; what is only one scene with the parallel suffering of three clones.

The potential of such shows usually dries up not earlier than 2-3 seasons, so now is the time to enjoy “Debris”. It is also the perfect benefit for Tucker. The actor already finds a chance to show himself brilliantly, for example, in “Kingdom”, “American Gods” or “Westworld”.

But the role of Brian – the role of the forefront – is practically written for him. And even if the whipping up intrigue in “Wreckage” ends up being resolved by a weak ending, the series should be given a chance, at least for Tucker’s sake.

“You can learn a language anywhere, even in the provinces”: how I have been teaching English since the age of 19

0

“Yesterday’s schoolboy will not teach anything”, “you cannot reach Advanced without living abroad”, “top knowledge is given only in top universities” – why all these are stereotypes, says Maxim Streletsky, a teacher at the Skyeng online school.

Change five teachers and not be able to connect two words in English

Yes, I’m 22, but I’ve been teaching English for three years now and have taught over 3,000 lessons. I am a teacher, although I had no intention of becoming one. This is how it usually happens: first, you help your friends and neighbors, schoolchildren, nothing serious – and suddenly you realize that you like it. And the stereotype that only women teach is just a stereotype.

I understand how much a good teacher means, because I changed five at school, but I still could not connect two words in English. But then I got to the right teacher – and everything changed: she inspired me to study.

My classmates and I were teenagers, Olga Stepanovna is already retired, but she showed by her example how cool it is to learn new things. She taught us that a teacher is not a machine, but a person. She was not afraid to admit that she did not know something, she laughed at our jokes, found new American books.

Of course, learning English in Chicago is easier than in Kremenets, where I lived. Immediately only you, your teacher and your computer communicate in English. But it is possible: a province, a no-name university – all this does not matter if there is a desire and a goal.

You don’t have to live abroad to speak the language

I also thought before: you must definitely go abroad, and then I realized that a small town and a university are even a plus. Here they can pay attention to you, unlike huge branded universities, in which no one means anything to anyone. And besides, American volunteers came to us, there were conversation clubs, the teachers spoke excellently – I never felt slighted.

I got to Skyeng when I was in my second year – and I hadn’t taught online before. I studied with students in a cafe or at their home. It was a completely new environment for me and a new approach. Well, and panic, of course! What if I forget something? What if your voice trembles? Here the adaptation helped a lot: I had a workshop, a test lesson with a methodologist, which went off with a bang – and only then did the first student.

In general, the nerves of the young teacher help: the more you get nervous, the better you prepare for the lesson. And then very quickly and the fear disappears. In addition, my first student Anton was very capable – he grasped everything on the fly, and this gave me confidence. By the way, we worked with him for a long time in the end – and got to the level to which he was striving.

I still remember my first lesson. Now I have a good desk and a comfortable chair, but then I put my laptop on a pile of shoe boxes. It was awfully uncomfortable! So it quickly became clear: everything should be grown-up, even though you just come to work in another room. Now I keep an eye on everything: even so as not to sit up and do push-ups between lessons.

I earn enough to rent an apartment in a big city

Without coffee in the morning, this is already an attribute of the first lesson. I wake up at 9, shower, breakfast, coffee. Then the first lesson at 11, and the last one may end at 10 pm, and in between there are a couple of breaks. I teach 4-5 lessons a day, and then I can still check the student’s essay at two in the morning so that I can meet in the classroom in the morning and sort it out.

Now I have about 20 students and I earn enough to rent an apartment in a big city in Ukraine. In the summer and New Year’s holidays, there are “seasons” when students arrange vacations for themselves, then the income, of course, is slightly less. I reached this level because I wanted to make good money and was ready to work. And the students themselves motivated not to stop there.

Each lesson is like the first one for me: I carefully select a topic for each student, watch homework, build the course of the lesson in my head. My students have different hobbies, different language problems. I explain blockchain to one in a lesson, and discuss Guy Ritchie’s “Gentlemen” with another. Now I not only teach, but also work as a proofreader – I want to participate in the development of lessons.

The biggest problem in learning is “English for myself”

I enjoy watching people develop. I like to go to the goal with them. With one student, we have already 264 lessons together: she came to prepare for an interview in English – and in the end she got a job. And now we have taken a special course on the platform: Irina works in a pharmaceutical company, she often needs specific vocabulary.

When the disciples say “it’s all thanks to you,” I say, “no, it’s thanks to you and our teamwork.” The biggest challenge in learning is English for myself. You should always look for goals – well, at least watch the same “Breaking Bad” in the original, and then you will practice in a completely different way. Well, to treat mistakes with optimism: read instead of housewife – it’s okay, just a reason to smile.

My age makes it easy to adapt to a student, I have no idea “I am a teacher, I am always right.” True, I am against it when they want to switch to “you” – I prefer to keep friendly-formal relations. I try to be flexible, understand trends, choose the latest materials. Now many students are interested in IT, artificial intelligence, and I myself began to study all this. Received a second education in applied linguistics.

I am glad that I have an interesting and challenging job, where you should never stop. In teaching, you will not get away with what you learned at the university. Therefore, next to me now lie a bunch of books in English, in order to go from Advanced to Proficiency. I watch TV shows and copy accents, read the Guardian, go to the British Council, take Cambridge IT courses and go to conferences. And I communicate in English – with those American volunteers whom I met as a schoolboy.

And if suddenly the students say “yes, I will never learn English”, I let them listen to the recording of their speech in the first lessons. And I say: “Well, if you don’t see the difference, I am powerless.” This is usually enough. You have to understand that there is no limit to perfection, there is no such thing that you have learned 500 words – and it will be easy in the future. No, it will always be difficult. But it’s worth it – because before you thought it was difficult even to say “My name is Masha”.

My advice to a novice teacher: do not be afraid of something “not to know”, this is natural. Always be interested in what the student wants and what his emotional state is. Sometimes a student comes overwhelmed after a hard day at work, and at such a moment it is important to show that learning English is fun and interesting.

Review of the 1st season of the anime series “Pacific Rim: Dark Zone” (2021) from Netflix

0

“Pacific Rim” by Guillermo del Toro is, in my opinion, the best Hollywood film about giant monsters and showdowns with them in principle. This is, in fact, the perfect adaptation of a nonexistent anime, where, in the light of the spotlights, there are battles of huge robots with monsters, and the whole script can be placed on a napkin. Now, eight years after the release of the first film, Netflix is making a full-length anime, Pacific Rim: The Black. What could have gone wrong here, you ask?

In general, for an anime based on “Frontier”, you wouldn’t even have to think too much about the script. They would show the school of the Jaeger pilots, their first assignments, relationships and showdowns – and voila, here’s a typical mecha anime, only in the setting of the del Toro movie. True, the writers of the “Dark Zone” – Greg Johnson (X-Men Evolution) and Craig Kyle (Thor: Ragnarok) – decided to take a more difficult path and write something original. It turned out strange, and I have too many questions about the show.

Despite all the efforts of mankind, kaiju continues to crowd out people. At some point, Australia has to be evacuated, thereby surrendering the continent to the monsters. The main characters, brother and sister Taylor and Haley, cannot get to the evacuation zone in time, so their parents – the Jaeger pilots – go to Sydney for help. The promised two weeks stretch for five years, and the heroes, desperate to see their living relatives, suddenly find the Huntsman, who has been standing under their settlement all this time.

Alas, rash actions (that is, an attempt to start the car) leads to disaster when a kaiju is thrown into the settlement, attracted by the loud sound of a siren.

From here the journey of two guys begins, at their disposal only a training Huntsman without weapons. Their goal is to find their parents and get to Sydney, but, as usual, they will have to face a host of other problems along the way.

By the way, here I want to ask the series the first question – what period of time are shown to us at all? Judging by certain events and mentions (for example, the series features the drone ranger cemetery from the second film), The Black takes place after the events of the second film. But if so, where did kaiju come from in Australia, why do rifts appear on the continent, and why did people not even try to recapture Australia after the events of the sequel? There they made it clear to us that further we will already invade the aliens, and here it is like that.

You, perhaps, are now twisting your finger at your temple and are preparing to say something like “Well, I’ve completely lost my mind, looking for a plot in the“ Pacific Frontier ”,” but the whole point is that in the “Dark Zone” the authors are exactly what on the plot and press.

Yes, I’m not kidding. The original, if you remember, mainly focused on the fights between the Jaegers and the kaiju, insanely pretentious dialogues in the spirit of “Today we cancel the Apocalypse!”, And somewhere in between there was the communication of characters and the disclosure of the universe of the film.

It worked in the first part, in the second part – there were exactly the battles in the foreground, and everything else was secondary. It existed simply because making a two-hour film about the continuous battle between giant robots and giant monsters would not have been enough for even Disney. And if so, then the timing needs to be hammered with something, which at the same time will help to glue the plot somehow. So, the “Dark Zone” works exactly the opposite.

There is a minimum of pathos in the series, and the same minimum of Jaegers and Kaiju battles. But the chatter of the characters, the disclosure of their personalities, as well as the demonstration of the world of “Frontier” is unexpectedly a lot here.

The trouble is, the authors never managed to find the perfect balance. Building a franchise universe with new details is cool. But to score on the key feature of all the series (in fact, battles) is not at all cool. As a result, we get a mecha-anime, the main characters of which spend most of the timekeeping not just outside their Huntsman, but also it is normal to fight with them only at the end.

Therefore, in the “Dark Zone” human relationships are in the foreground. Here the series manages to combine both typical templates of post-apocalyptic works and add its own flavor.

For example, people. At the time of the events of The Black, they somehow manage to survive in Australia, and even at the very least have adapted to the greatly changed world around. The main characters, for example, encounter an outright gang that travels through the wastelands under the guise of a nomadic settlement. The “inhabitants” of this mobile village are engaged in collecting various useful artifacts – for example, they are very interested in spare parts for gamekeepers or kaiju eggs. Not gigantic, of course, but relatively small. Which raises additional questions – where did the little kaiju come from? Why the hell did they suddenly start laying eggs? But what about live birth and cloning, which were mentioned in the first film?

Although here you can shove everything into the scene. Australia and in our reality with you is capable of finishing you off in many different ways – so why couldn’t the kaiju there be able to adapt and enter into symbiosis with the “continent of death”?

Another group that is mentioned, but almost never shown is the cult of the Kaiju Sisters, who appeared in the “Dark Zone” straight from the pages of the comic book Pacific Rim: Aftermath. It’s too early to say anything about them, although in the second season they will clearly play an important role.

From the point of view of building the world, the series makes many more interesting touches, which in some places, however, break the logic of the Frontier universe. Here they have the opportunity to adopt the experience of other pilots with the help of special “training” records, and still existing hybrids of Jaegers and Kaiju (and they, apparently, are gradually evolving), and the devil knows what else.

And this is all great, of course, and the series reveals the characters much better than it was in the original dilogy. Only the “Pacific Rim” itself is almost gone because of this.

Well, yes, another problem is the division of the series into two seasons (and this is at least). The story here ends at a cliffhanger, and I have a suspicion that the first season will eventually turn out to be an introductory one, and the main action will be just in the second. Although, of course, they are unlikely to give up chatting either.

The result is a paradoxical situation. The anime, filmed as a sequel to a film that seemed to be based on a mecha anime (non-existent), suddenly turned out to be completely different from what it should have been. The anime version of “Frontier” should be something in the spirit of “Gurren Lagan” – an insanely pretentious story with humor, a bunch of robots and extraordinary personalities, and as a result, the authors came up with something in the spirit of “Mad Max” with furs and reflective teenagers.

The series was drawn by Polygon Pictures studio (Blame !, Knights of Sidonia, Star Wars: The Clone Wars of 2008), and they got another series in their own style – cel shading and three-dimensional graphics, to which, as usual, there are questions. If you have already watched something from the studio’s works (the same “Sidonia”, for example), then you are familiar with the style. Not everyone likes it, but at least with 3D animation they work better than most other Japanese studios. Therefore, they did not succeed in the 2016 Berserk – that is, their eyes do not bleed – but there are still certain problems with the picture.

My main complaint about the “Dark Zone”, in general, is simple – in pursuit of the expansion of the “Frontier” universe, the authors managed to lose a number of key features of the original, including the battle scenes I have mentioned many times. And this is a problem, because the original film is loved for them.

Is The Black worth watching? Complex issue. At the very least, I would advise you to postpone your acquaintance with the series until the release of the second season, because the story ends in mid-sentence, leaving too many unanswered questions.

On the other hand, if you like the Frontier universe, then you have no special options. The third film is back when they start filming with all this coronavirus, so only the Netflix series remains. Only one “but” – if you expect from the series the same epic as from the movie del Toro, then it is better to lower the degree of expectations. Otherwise, you will be disappointed.

Review of the film “Social Network” | Kanobu

0

On March 11, the Silk Road will be released in cinemas, a biopic about the creator of a world darknet website selling drugs, weapons and other illegal services. The picture was leaked to torrents a few weeks before the start of distribution, but this is far from the main problem of the film.

Ross Ulbricht (Nick Robinson), 27, preaches libertarianism and wants to save the world. In his opinion, any of our actions outside the government’s control strengthens the market and weakens the state. The hero often thinks about the human right to use drugs.

He is for the safe and anonymous purchase of “grass” or something stronger, because it will take people off the streets and give them not only freedom of choice, but also protection. No one will rob you or kill you in a dark alley in a creepy area if you order drugs online and the postman takes you right to the door.

Having considered all the details, Ross Ulbricht learns to program and learns the basics of working on the darknet through the Tor browser. In an underground network, where it is almost impossible to track someone, the hero decides to create an online store and openly sell drugs. And in order to protect buyers and guarantee their anonymity, he puts payments in bitcoins – an electronic currency that cannot be tracked either. This is how the path of Silk Road begins – the world’s largest Internet site with soft and hard drugs, weapons and various illegal services.

In parallel with this, a former employee of the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) and almost retired Rick Bowden (Jason Clarke) comes out of a psychiatric hospital after disrupting a months-long operation to capture a Mexican drug lord. They do not want to leave him in the department, so the former boss arranges for Rick in the cybercrime department.

Here he has a 26-year-old boss, everywhere the Internet and computers. And old Rick doesn’t know a damn thing about that. Until retirement nine months, so he is asked to sit quietly and not interfere with work. But Rick is trying to prove to these fucking millennials that years of operational experience is everything, so he grabs onto selling drugs through the recently launched darknet site Silk Road.

The original name of the “Asocial Network” is Silk Road, that is, the “Silk Road”. But the localizers saw, and not without reason, parallels with David Fincher’s “Social Network”, so they sensibly decided to give the tape just such a name. After all, fewer people will go to the Silk Road than to the Asocial Network. The latter is both more modern, and in the subject, and refers to Fincher’s tape, and also promises something forbidden, which means there will be an intrigue.

And the very personality of Ross Ulbricht is ambiguous, he is an unrecognized genius, dresses strangely, burns with his work and makes a million dollars a day. Isn’t it a parallel with Mark Zuckerberg? True, he did not sell drugs, but according to some, he did a much worse thing – he created the most popular social network in the world, Facebook.

The director of the film, Tiller Russell, has shot few feature films, but he knows a lot about documentary works. He has a couple of three serious projects, including four episodes of the documentary Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer and the film Operation Odessa, an incredible story of an attempt to sell a Soviet submarine to a Colombian drug lord, started by a Jewish emigrant from the USSR.

Apparently the director decided to combine business with pleasure and make a feature film based on a cool life story. True, for the sake of cinematography, many unnecessary and unnecessary details were added to it, but they are honestly warned about this at the very beginning.

The creators took not very popular young actors for the main roles, but just in case they enlisted the support of experienced Jason Clark. The star of Terminator Genisys and Planet of the Apes: Revolution got the bloated role of a policeman, who was added the tragedy of life’s circumstances and, for some reason, the struggle of Generation X and boomers against millennials.

His agent, Rick Bowden, clings to a profession where it has failed, and his daughter has developmental problems, so she needs a special school with a payment of $ 40,000 a year. There is no money, his career is over, and Rick clings to the remnants of his past life and becomes close to the informant Rayford (Darrell Britt-Gibson). Their relationship is evolving too quickly from a cop – an informant to a tough loser – admired sidekick.

Apparently, the director liked the antagonist more, because he wrote it out much better than Ross Ulbricht, the real main character. And although the plot forced the policeman to break the law, but for the good of the family, which means for the viewer he at the end turned from an ugly duck into a white swan.

But with Ross Ulbricht and actor Nick Robinson who played him, it turned out the other way around. At first he is cute and cocky, smart and adventurous. His parents do not understand him, he wants to save the world and invents Amazon on the darknet. What is not a hero for the modern generation? But then the guy scores on the girl and his best friend, thinks only about the site, and then goes to serious crimes. As a result, Ross’s character becomes a lost something (or even nothing), and Nick Robinson’s play goes into one plane.

As the hero turns into an antihero, so does the chemistry between character and actor. Perhaps there is a problem here and in a poorly written script that does not reveal its essence, or maybe all this makes it difficult to understand important details left behind the scenes. The viewer is shown Ross Ulbricht as the one-sided head of the online drug trade, because of which relatives and strangers suffer.

In my case, knowing the original story of Ross Ulbricht prevented a positive perception of the painting. I’ve written about him in a selection of the best technology documentaries. Therefore, I advise you to look exactly at the real investigation. Naturally, to a viewer not familiar with what actually happened, inconsistencies and a weak explanation of what is happening may not seem critical. But it will become even more difficult to understand this film.

Here, almost nothing is clear in the investigation, illogical explanations for the evidence are given, and a host of other mistakes are made that leave more questions. Without knowing the source, it will be difficult to understand the story. And we also need to monitor the development of the heroes’ relations and read the emotions from Ross’s face, because otherwise they cannot be understood. Therefore, the viewer has every chance to get confused in what is happening and sit with bewilderment on his face until the end of the film.

The story of the real Ross Ulbricht and Silk Road is much more epic and twisted than the film based on it. It is clear that they wanted to simplify it, because there are a lot of ambiguities and violations on the part of the authorities, and it was not Bowden that caught Ross, but the cop really stole Ulbricht’s money.

Life is often more interesting than any scenario. Our case is just such. Here it was necessary to take and shoot as it is, so that a slightly complex, but cool movie at the level of David Fincher’s “Social Network” came out. Anyone who is not afraid to make such an intellectual movie will become a part of the culture and may even get some good money.

Here they backtracked, so the history of the most controversial Internet genius of our time in the “Asocial Network” is simplified and leveled. The devils who are brought to the fore, and almost the main theme of the confrontation made an understandable, but long-worn clash of generations. And when this happens, it is better to turn to the original source, because a documentary picture can tighten much more, and any of the articles written on this topic reads no worse than a bestseller.

In the film there was such a phrase: “When you give people freedom, you do not know what they will do with it …”. So the viewer in this case also has the freedom of choice: watch this film, watch the documentary, or learn about Ross Ulbrecht on the Internet. What will you choose?

Opinion on Supernova with Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci

0

On March 11, the film “Supernova” about an LGBT couple performed by Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci was released in Russian cinemas. One of the main characters suffers from dementia and gradually loses his memory, so he finally goes on a short trip with his partner. There was some drama and (self) censorship: an abbreviated version was shown on the screens, a passport was rumored to be checked at the entrance to the halls, and various media softly called Supernova a story of two friends. Explain what the “obscene” is happening in the film – and why the increased attention to it seems strange.

Supernova is a typical chamber film with a modest plot. He does not declare any loud truths, is completely tied to the interaction of actors, appeals to completely universal human experiences. This is a drama with two points of view – about how terrible it is to lose a loved one, and how terrible it is to lose yourself.

And the effect that the film has produced is really like a supernova explosion: with discussions on Facebook, cut scenes and rumors that the distributor asked not to position the movie as a gay drama. If we compare the descriptions of “Supernova” on the Internet, for some it seems at all that this is a film about the farewell of two friends.

But you must admit, it’s strange to call the police for a film about strong male friendship, and even with an age limit of 18+?

At the same time, the director of the film, little-known Harry McQueen, is not against cuts: he is glad that in Russia they will see his films at all. It makes no sense to understand his position or the intricacies of modern Russian legislation. But such an attitude is especially absurd and unfair because it was Supernova that got it – a quiet premiere, which under other circumstances would not have paid attention at all.

The film follows the pianist Sam (Colin Firth) and the writer Tasker (Stanley Tucci), who take a short trip around the UK. They ride in a jointly purchased trailer with their dog, stay with friends, remember their past adventures on the shores of a beautiful lake. But, what is most obvious and sad is that Sam and Tasker are saying goodbye.

Dementia is an extremely common syndrome (but not the disease itself). Dementia affects about 5-8% of older people. According to WHO estimates, by 2030 there will be 82 million people with this syndrome in the world, by 2050 – already 152. It is dementia that affects Tasker. Like the drama Still Alice with Julianne Moore or the annoyingly iconic Notebook, he gets confused in words and events, can get lost in space, and finds himself increasingly helpless.

Every day brings Tasker closer to the moment when he no longer remembers his partner. Sam stubbornly refuses to leave him to someone else’s responsibility, in every possible way supports and even abandons his profession. It is impossible not to mention that the chemistry of Firth and Tucci is something transcendental, turning even the usual conversations of two grumpy men into poetry.

By the way, back in 2009, Colin Firth already played an openly gay man – in the drama of a good director Tom Ford “A Single Man”. The law on the promotion of homosexuality in Russia had not yet been passed, so the film received a rating of 16+: it contains obscene language and sex scenes.

In Supernova (let me remind you that it has a rating of 18+), no one has the time or energy for everything that is now forbidden to be shown on domestic screens. And literally there is no strength: a chaste scene was cut out of the film, in which Sam and Tasker fail to have sex. Quite an ordinary scene for a movie about serious illnesses, and not only about them.

But between Sam and Tasker there is a sea of tenderness and care, and this is the very case when your soul mate is your best friend. Their relationship does not become the main subject of the film, it is about something completely different.

But even without them, the story simply crumbles: at least it is not clear why Sam is so afraid of losing his “friend”. If we accept that the relationship between them is not romantic, as they tried to edit in the final version – what are they then?

The main conflict of “Supernova” rests on the fact that Sam refuses to give up and plan his life without Tasker. Yes, the loss of a best friend can be a huge tragedy and break a person – there are a lot of examples of this, including in the movies. But this is not at all the same as losing your only love in old age.

McQueen, Firth and Tucci have a very calm, low-key film – the same as the relationship of the main characters. It is fluid and devoid of drama in unnecessary places; the plot already has Tasker disease and all the consequences that follow logically.

Personally, it was this melancholy pacification that I liked the most. It shines through everything, including Tucci’s beautiful monologue under the starry sky. His hero has already admitted that very soon he will join the billions of particles that make up the universe. At the same time, at other moments, both conversations with Sam, and the occasional remarks with which he exchanges with friends, turn out to be very fragmentary and stingy. This is what adults say with a natural, not strained and not pretentious outlook on life.

In the same way, the well-established, even, long-deprived of a spark relationship between Sam and Tasker is shown. From the very first shots, it is obvious that over the years they have developed into an ordinary marriage – imagine, very slightly different from heterosexual.

And against the background of this total calmness and acceptance, all the hysteria that Supernova causes looks especially absurd and funny.

Hyde. How to Prepare to Watch the Director’s Cut of Justice League by Zach Snyder

0

Already on March 18, HBO Max and KinoPoisk HD will simultaneously release the director’s cut of Justice League. By the four-hour epic from Zach Snyder, there are quite high expectations from the fans – it was not in vain that they sought its release. If you nevertheless decide to defeat this titan in one session in front of a laptop or TV screen, this is a reminder material for you. Based on personal experience.

Remember why we love Zach Snyder

Nobody can predict what the alternative version of Justice League will be. But one thing is for sure: fans of Zack Snyder waited for their finest hour and did a completely unprecedented thing.

Why is Snyder’s version so important?

First of all, I think because of the “300”. Decades, maybe centuries will pass, but the legendary character of this film is unlikely to ever be blown away. The perfect combination of serious, pretentious style, good shooting and limitless potential is to blame for everything. In addition, there is still a good “Dawn of the Dead” and “Sucker Punch”.

And of course, during the league’s darkest and most drawn-out moments, remind yourself that Zack Snyder has directed The Guardians. After all, a separate caste of people is still the best film adaptation of comics in the history of cinema. And since Snyder has directed The Guardians, we will forgive him for the four-hour epic about the League.

Stock up on snacks and coffee

Film lengths are a potential problem. And in cinemas “Justice League” will not be shown, and after all there it would be most convenient to run out for popcorn and cola.

Unfortunately, the producers of snacks did not pay for this material, so we will not advise any specific ones. But stocking up on food to your taste is really worth it. “Snyderkat” is conceived precisely as a full-fledged film, therefore it is recommended to watch it at one time and on the big screen.

No, no, yes, your hand will reach for additional fuel for the brain. For example, I stocked up with an oreo cookie in honor of one of the movie posters.

Remember all the awkward questions (and get ready to look for answers)

A wonderful heading “Inconvenient Questions” is our support, friend and comrade when watching “Snyderkat”. It accumulates all the shortcomings and nonsense of the 2017 version, which the director’s cut can fix.

Disclaimer: Kanobu is tolerant of viewers who love Justice League 2017! But there is indeed a rather long series of questions about the film, its logic and plot decisions.

There is a theory that all the answers are hidden in a pristine, ideal version of Snyder. Editing and dramatically reducing the picture can really affect its meaning. Let’s see how much Snyder’s version turns out to be more logical and slimmer than Whedon’s version.

Browse our hub

From the moment Snyder announced the director’s cut, Kanobu has meticulously pieced together all the promotional material, hints and theories about the upcoming League. All of them are collected in one explanatory material.

In addition to news, the hub has collected the best articles about Justice League – a review of the old version, accompanying DCEU films and some thoughts on why the superhero team did not work out.

Refresh the Bible

Understanding the references at the level of Superman-Jesus and Longinus’s spear from kryptonite is not difficult. But in the Old and New Testaments, there are many more fascinating moments that a director can turn into metaphors.

You can joke about “biblical references” as much as you want, but Snyder himself began to play along with the audience. At least one would like to think that the Joker in the image of Christ is such a meta-humor.

One way or another, we advise you to skim through the most famous biblical stories: this broadens your horizons, and understanding the film can simplify

Put on a good soundtrack

There may be valid claims to the 2017 film, but unlikely to the soundtrack. Of course, it is not as contrastingly beautiful as the tracks for Suicide Squad. But Danny Elfman always creates melodies at the level, and the rock version of Come Together is capable of inspiring a superhero mood in anyone.

View (or read) recaps of previous films

I hope you, like me, sometimes want to ask Zach Snyder: Zach, why don’t you shoot TV shows? The director’s and theatrical versions of his films are so full of events that you can’t remember everything.

Especially for this, there is a glorious tradition of recaps abroad (from the English recap – resume, summing up). And if knowledge of English allows, you can remember “Man of Steel” and “Batman v Superman” in just 4 minutes.

Unfortunately, Russian-language resources are rarely engaged in recaps (as they say, a note to the hostess). But even a quick glance at the description of the plot on the Wiki will be useful.

Optional – still revise the “Justice League”

A hybrid film from the efforts of Snyder and Whedon came out in 2017 – almost four years ago. Details and plot twists for such a period are erased from the memory of even the most devoted fans.

To fully compare the two versions, you still need to refresh your memory of the first “League”. In general, I did not like this film at all, but even it has positive moments. And even if, in your opinion, they do not exist, the contrast from a lighter “theater-goer” and a more serious “director” will be interesting.

And, in the name of Superman, don’t forget – Zach Snyder once directed The Guardians!
