Ana Jannuzzi, a doctor specializing in pediatrics and infant sleep, explains the association
The moment of breastfeeding brings many discoveries for the mother and the baby and, therefore, it is normal that doubts also arise in this period, isn’t it? An update on a compilation of studies on alcohol and breastfeeding, published in January 2022 by PubliMed, points out that alcohol consumption by breastfeeding mothers can affect the baby’s sleep and even her behavior.
For Ana Jannuzzi, a doctor specializing in pediatrics and infant sleep, caution is needed in the consumption of alcohol while breastfeeding. “There is no defined what is a safe pattern of alcohol consumption during lactation. Even the International Pediatrics Association mentions that there is no safe level. Consuming alcohol in large amounts while breastfeeding can cause drowsiness, stunted growth, and decreased weight gain in babies,” she explains.
The doctor also points out that, despite the results of the studies, it is also important to take into account other external factors. “This association between babies’ sleep and alcohol consumption is correct, but other factors should also be observed, such as whether the mother who consumed alcohol is breastfeeding this baby in a noisy place. It is important to clarify that research on the subject is carried out in controlled environments, where these and other variables are not present. Therefore, it is not an exact association”, emphasizes Dr. Ana Jannuzzi.
To help minimize doubts on the subject, consulting a specialist is essential. In addition, Dr. Jannuzzi recommends that mothers consult the table that suggests the ideal time interval between drinking alcohol and breastfeeding. “There are several tables that indicate how long mothers should wait, after drinking alcohol, to breastfeed or express milk. Another important point is to know that in the medium and long term, alcohol consumption can lead to childhood obesity, so mothers need to be cautious about drinking at this stage”, she warns.
