The King of Horror has said he will not be voting for this year’s Oscar nominees and is calling for the ceremony to be canceled as the city suffers massive fires.
American writer and cult horror author Stephen King spoke out against holding the current Oscar ceremony.
On his page on the Bluesky social network, King said that he would not vote for the nominees and believed that the glamor show was inappropriate against the backdrop of the fires that engulfed Los Angeles.
“I won’t be voting at the Oscars this year. I think they should cancel it. No glamor while LA burns,” King wrote.
The message caused a wave of reactions on social networks. Some users supported the writer’s position, but others emphasized that even in tragic times, people need joy and inspiration.
Stephen King responded to the criticism by comparing the ceremony to an old legend: “I hear everything you say about the Oscars, that it’s a celebration of life and the show must go on, and so on. Everything is has a certain meaning, but to me, it’s like Nero playing his lyre while Rome burns, or in this case, wearing fancy clothes while Los Angeles burns.”
So far, Oscar organizers have not announced the possible cancellation of the ceremony. However, discussions about the advisability of conducting it in conditions of large-scale natural disasters continue.
It was previously reported that Stephen King announced that he was leaving the social network X (formerly Twitter), citing a “toxic environment.”
