Mattel is under fire for a packaging typo for collectible dolls that redirected to an adult website instead of the Wicked movie website.
Mattel, a company known for its dolls, is at the center of a scandal over an error made in the packaging of a special edition of toys dedicated to the movie Wicked.
Instead of the movie’s official page, the address of a porn site was placed on the box, which angered parents.
According to Variety, a woman in South Carolina filed a lawsuit after her daughter clicked on a wrong link and encountered adult content. The lawsuit alleges that the girl suffered “substantial emotional distress” from viewing the inappropriate content, and that Mattel has not offered compensation for damages.
“These are violent scenes filled with nude images depicting sexual acts,” the lawsuit states.
Mattel pulled the toys from sale and apologized for the situation. In a statement, the company said it was “aware of a typographical error in the packaging of Mattel Wicked collectible dolls sold primarily in the United States, which was intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page.” The manufacturer advises consumers to “throw away the packaging or hide the link” if the dolls have been sold.
It was previously reported that Mattel, in collaboration with the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), has developed a blind Barbie doll.
