The artist talked about her self-acceptance process and revealed that she plans to create a safe emotional space for other people
Alice Caymmia 34-year-old artist, faced a long road before he felt comfortable openly discussing his sexual orientation. Since 2014, the theme had been a constant in his works, but acquired new relevance after a profound process of self-discovery.
In a report during the Paraty International Literary Festival (Flip), as reported by UOL’s Splash portal, Alice He shared memories of his adolescence, when he already attracted curious looks. “In my youth, when I had my first girlfriend, it was a scandal. Today, I identify as pansexual and also queer, because I do drag,” he said.
Since the release of their inaugural album in 2012, Alice Caymmi realizes that issues of diversity have become inseparable from contemporary artistic production. “I have always been welcomed and now I reciprocate that embrace in a public way. My art has always addressed these themes. It is difficult to create something that does not dialogue with every form of expression; art without this interaction loses its interest”, highlighted the singer.
Different generations
Granddaughter of the legendary Dorival Caymmi, Alice observes the difference between generations when it comes to discussions about sexuality. While their older relatives, like Danilo Caymmi and uncles Nana and Dori Caymmi, remained silent on the subject, today’s generation feels free to explore and share their identities and personal experiences.
Nonetheless, Alice recognizes the persistent challenges for LGBTQIA+ artists. The visibility obtained can become a burden, restricting the public’s perception of your creations. “Often, this question precedes recognition of the art itself. I see colleagues and friends in the community saying, ‘I wish they would listen to me more for my artistic work’. Incredible artists like Liniker often face this situation”, reflected Alice.
