The actor was invited to pay tribute in character as the writer, reading the work ‘Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas’
This Monday, the 23rd, the event took place Black Wall Project at the Brazilian Academy of Letters, in Rio de Janeiro.
The project has been active since 2018, mapping black memory through urban art. The aim is to show that they reject historical erasure and support the arrival of black people in leadership positions.
It was then that the muralist Cazetogether with the producer and researcher Pedro Rajãobegan displaying their art in the form of portraits and biographies of black historical figures on public walls throughout the city.
Among them are names like Elza Soares, Clementina de Jesus, Cartola, Lima Barreto, Luiz Gama, Waldemar Santanaamong other tributes.
As the project grew, this art began to be perpetuated by other historical heritage sites, such as the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS-RJ), Museum of Afro-Brazilian Culture and History (MUHCAB)the last residence of the Black Admiral – John Candico, samba school courts, and much more!
The tribute
The actor Samuel Assis, 41, was invited to dress up in honor of the writer’s 185th birthday Axe of Assisi (1839-1908) and read an excerpt from the book ““Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas”, which took place on Monday afternoon at the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
Furthermore, the artist Caze signed a mural with the writer’s portrait. The art took six days to complete, reaching 150 meters. The portrait produced was hand-painted with aesthetic references from Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century.
The writer’s origins are rediscovered, in the Proviência hill, where he sold candy in his youth.
In an interview for Who Magazinethe actor reported: “I was very happy to be invited to pay tribute Axe of Assisi at the inauguration of this beautiful panel of a writer who represents so much for national literature. He deserves all the respect for his undeniable genius. Furthermore, I am a big fan of the Negro Muro project, which has been portraying our black community in a beautiful and representative way.”
