Update to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints handbook reinforces views on gender identity
Among the changes, the church says gender is based on biological sex at birth and discourages surgical, medical or social transitions. Transgender people who choose to transition will face restrictions within the church, such as being barred from receiving or exercising the priesthood and being limited in participating in certain ceremonies and activities.
The handbook defines gender as an essential characteristic in Heavenly Father’s plan of happiness, stating that gender identity should correspond to a person’s biological sex at birth. In addition, the Church advises that leaders should not seek counseling for transitions, claiming that such actions result in restrictions on membership and participation.
Despite these restrictions, the handbook also mentions that transgender people who do not seek to transition can enjoy all the privileges of membership in the Church, as long as they follow God’s commandments. The document further encourages members who struggle with gender dysphoria to seek guidance from their bishops.
In addition to policies regarding transgender people, the handbook emphasizes that lesbians, gays, and bisexuals should be treated with sensitivity, love, and respect. While the Church does not take a position on the causes of same-sex attraction, it does state that such feelings are not sinful, but homosexual acts are prohibited. Members who remain faithful to the commandments, regardless of their sexual orientation, may fully participate in Church activities and ceremonies.
