MMA fighter receives criticism for forced kiss on rival

Gabi Garcia says Jones “crossed the line” by grabbing her for a kiss before the fight; the fight was initially canceled but later resumed.

Australian MMA fighter Craig Jones has been heavily criticized by his rival, Brazilian Gabi Garcia, after an incident before a fight. During a weigh-in meeting on August 15, Jones grabbed Garcia’s face and forced a kiss, which prompted immediate condemnation.

Garcia, who has 71 career wins in the women’s Jiu-Jitsu division, reacted quickly, backtracking and expressing her outrage. “You’re an asshole, man. Seriously? F**k you, you crossed the line,” the fighter said. Jones’s action caused great discomfort and led to the temporary cancellation of the fight.

Jones took to Instagram to announce the fight’s cancellation, stating: “Fight canceled. I guess Brazilians can’t stand jokes.” However, Gabi Garcia soon clarified the situation, posting on her social media that the fight was back on, encouraging Jones to do the same.

The incident also sparked a surge in online searches about Gabi Garcia, with many people questioning whether the athlete was trans. This type of speculation, known as “transvestism,” is considered harmful and based on distorted views of femininity and gender, and excludes LGBTQIA+ people.

Gabi Garcia, who competes in the heavyweight category and stands at 6’3″, is one of the most respected figures in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. She has been married to Bruno Almeida since 2018, although the relationship has faced difficulties, with Garcia publicly accusing her husband of fraud and abuse in 2023.
