The Vice-Rectorates of Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs at UFRRJ emphasize that the implementation of these quotas aims to guarantee greater access to the university, in addition to increasing diversity and representation of transsexuals and transvestites in the academic environment. According to the proposal, 3% of undergraduate places in each course and shift, per academic period, will be reserved for this group.
The document establishes that interested candidates must take the National High School Exam (Enem) and register by means of a self-declaration. At the time of registration, those approved must present the General Registration Document (RG) with social name or rectified birth certificate, in addition to proving completion of high school in a public school.
The evaluation of self-declarations will be carried out by members of the Permanent Committee for Institutional Policy on Diversity, Gender, Ethnicity/Race and Inclusion (CPID), who will be chosen for their expertise in the area. UFRRJ also warns that, in the event of proven fraud, the student’s enrollment will be canceled.
If the proposal is approved, UFRRJ will be the first higher education institution in the state of Rio de Janeiro to implement a policy of reserving places for trans and transvestite people, joining 14 other Brazilian public universities that have already adopted this initiative.
The discussion on quotas for trans and transvestite people at UFRRJ began in 2021, with the creation of the CPID by Deliberation No. 430/2021. Since then, anti-sexist, anti-LGBTIphobic and anti-racist actions have been carried out with greater frequency and involvement of the university community. In September 2023, UFRRJ had already expanded quotas in postgraduate studies, including trans, quilombola and refugee people, through Deliberation No. 556/2023.
