Sergipe LGBT+ Parade highlights family diversity in its 23rd edition

Event on the Atalaia waterfront celebrates different family configurations and includes artistic attractions and political demonstrations

The 23rd LGBT+ Parade of Sergipe, next Sunday, August 11, at Orla de Atalaia, in Aracaju, will have as its central theme the diversity in family configurations and the queer community. With the motto “Family is who respects you”, the organizers seek to draw attention to the plurality of concepts and models of family, challenging the traditional view that only cisgender heterosexual couples form a legitimate family.

The event will begin at 1:00 p.m. with performances on the (Sobre)Viver stage, set up in the Cinelândia beach parking lot. The public will be able to enjoy performances by dance groups, drag queens, singers and other artists who represent the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community. The political demonstration, which will begin at Passarela do Caranguejo, will include speeches before the electric trios parade, which will feature shows by local artists and a national attraction yet to be confirmed.

Tathiane Araújo, coordinator of the Parade and an activist since the first edition of the event in Sergipe, held in 2002, highlighted the importance of recognizing the different forms of family. According to Tathiane, the growing conservative wave in Brazil has devalued families formed by LGBT+ people, reinforcing a restricted family model. “Often, the life of an LGBT person begins with the rejection of the heterosexual family, leading them to build new families, which may include friends, partners or new parents,” says the activist.

The Parade is part of the 2024 Pride Circuit, a series of activities that precede the main event. The program includes pamphlets in neighborhoods of Aracaju, debates on health, employability and combating prejudice, as well as cultural events, exhibitions, film screenings and debates. The Circuit will close with the Human Rights Seminar, which will bring together activists from Sergipe and other regions of the country.
