Miss South Africa contestant Chidimma Adeshina has withdrawn her candidacy amid a scandal involving fraud allegations against her mother.
The Miss South Africa beauty pageant is in the middle of a scandal after the government accused the mother of one of the finalists of fraud and identity theft.
Chidimma Adeshina, 23, has been the target of criticism on social media since she was announced as a finalist in the competition in July, with many, including members of the government, questioning her legitimacy, according to The Guardian.
Because of the scandal that broke out, the South African Ministry of Home Affairs was forced, at the request of the organizers, to launch an investigation into the citizenship of the said contestant. Upon investigation, it emerged that Adeshina’s father was Nigerian, and her mother allegedly falsified personal information as South African after Chidimma’s birth.
The scandal surrounding the finalist’s family has reached such a scale that some officials and public organizations, including the competition’s organizing committee, have called for a thorough investigation into the participant’s origins.
The Miss South Africa final will take place next weekend but Chidimma Adeshina will not be competing.
“Participating in the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant has been an exciting journey, however, after careful consideration, I have decided to withdraw from the competition for the safety and well-being of my family and myself. Such support has been received from at the Miss Association of South Africa, I left full of gratitude for the great experience,” she wrote on Instagram.
It was previously reported that Alma Cooper, a US Army officer from Michigan, received the title of Miss USA.
