As Hugo’s career grew, more people were able to follow Luca Kumahara’s great performance as a commentator.
Brazilian table tennis player Hugo Calderano made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the most queer of all, while also helping to raise the profile of trans people. By advancing in the matches, he drew the attention of the entire country on television – and who was commenting?
We had already advanced here that SporTV would have its first trans commentator, table tennis player (and also futsal player) Luca Kumahara. As Hugo’s career grew, more people were able to follow Luca’s great performance as a commentator.
SporTV, part of the Globo group, is the most important name in Brazilian sports broadcasting, known for its quality and excellence. By inviting Luca, they put a trans man in the commentary, looking only at his ability – and isn’t that exactly what we’ve been asking for for decades?
Hugo reached No. 3 in the world rankings in January 2022, becoming the best player from the Americas of all time. He is the first player from Latin America to reach the Top 10 of the ITTF World Rankings.
Hugo Calderano will not return to Brazil with a medal, but, unintentionally, he will arrive in the country known as the athlete who turned the spotlight on table tennis – and along with it, he took Luca’s voice and presence.
