After trans controversy, Imane Khelif calls for an end to bullying at the Olympics

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, currently competing in the Paris 2024 Olympics, has called for an end to bullying as she faces hostility over her participation in the women’s boxing event. Khelif is already guaranteed at least a bronze medal after beating Italy’s Angela Carini in just 46 seconds on August 1 – and has won support from the LGBT+ community.

Khelif, a middleweight competitor, has come under public scrutiny, similar to that of Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting. Both were disqualified from last year’s world championships for allegedly failing to meet eligibility criteria, according to the International Boxing Association (IBA). However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that Khelif meets current regulations.

In an interview with SNTV, Khelif, speaking in Arabic, called for an end to bullying, highlighting the devastating impact it can have. “I send a message to all people in the world to uphold the Olympic principles and the Olympic Charter, to refrain from bullying all athletes, because it has enormous effects. It can destroy people, it can kill people’s thoughts, spirit and mind. It can divide people.”

Already a queer icon, the athlete, who advanced to the women’s 66kg semifinals after defeating Hungary’s Anna Luca Hamori, expressed hope that her family had not been affected by the treatment she has received and acknowledged their concerns. She also thanked the IOC for their continued support and expressed her determination to win the gold medal as the best response to the criticism and attacks she has faced.

Khelif stressed the importance of refraining from bullying practices, especially in sports competition environments where the Olympic spirit must prevail. The medalist hopes that the situation will be overcome and that she can focus on achieving her ultimate goal in the competition.
